This year i decided to do a few things different.. one of which includes weld on bead lock rings. For those of u not familiar with em, thens tons of stuff wirtten on ema ll over the place. I ordered a set from longfield and copied em flat out - call me cheap! Dont have many pics here yet but they are coming soon... bit of background...

Mudpig and i decided to go all out... new rims to start with...ordered from summitracing (U.S. Wheel 88 Series Unpainted Daytona Wheels) - mine are 15X10's and Mudpigs are 15X8s. both have custom offsets of 3 inch (vs 4 for the 10;s and 3.75 for the 8's). Sure its rougher on wheel bearings but say goodbye to spring interferance issues. We subbed the ring welding job out and got em back 2 days later - very nice job.. anyone else looking to go this route I would refer this guy in a heartbeat. We then spent the day grinding down the excess rim, wire wheeling the welds, washing the entire rims down with varesol, then priming em. Here's a pic of em haging on a pipe drying...

tommorow its colour picking time for the exterior of the rims. I'll take a few close up shots of the rims, rings and bolts. Hopefully on monday, my self clinching nuts arrive and we can mount the rubber on the rims. pics to follow....

keep in mind, when doing a weld on bead lock, u effectivly change the rims size.. a 15X8 turns into a 15X10 (15X9.5 is closer to reality) and a 15X10 goes to almost 15X12. Once we have the rubber in hand we'll measure the bead thickness and post actual rim size increases.

Also keep in mind that this modification is NOT street legal. Dont ask me why, i dont care, it just isnt! Even flat towing a rig with these rings on may be an issue, i dont know for sure but figured I'd throw it out there for thought.

more pics to follow...

hate to rain on the paint parade but varsol is a no-no .it is oil based and the primer and paint will not stick.Go to an auto body supply and get some lacquer thinner and a good quality primer.Etching primer is best to use. it would suck to mount the tires and not have them hold air cause the paint let go.

We ued tremclad primer, all the pieces were wiped down and air dried, primer seems to have stuck on well. We're not worried about an air tight seal as were gonna grind off the paint/primer off the inner bead and silicone/caulk it down. Hopefully the rest of the paint holds, otherwise it'll be up to all the mudd to keep the rust away :D

Ya ...Varsol might make the primer not fully bond to the rim and it may take some sunshine and a few hot days before you notice it peeling off (I hope it doesn't).
Naptha or Acetone are the way to go. 90% or stronger alchohol would be good too and right up your ally !!!!!

crappy.. well were gonna mount the tires tommorow and give the primer a few days and see how it holds up. We'll brush paint on the exterior of the rims after tires are on, reprime if neccesary. Back when I used to work in a steel fab shop, we always used varesol and wiped dry, even thinned the primer and paint down just a little with the varasol for the gun, never had an issue.. guess we'll see what happenes. tx for the input.

I do have 26 rings left over - with bolts. Once all the rings are done and I have all the bolts in my hand, then I will be selling them. They will be less than $100 but I have to do the math to figure out exactly what they cost me. Once im ready, then I'll post em up for sale.

Word to the wise... regular little prybars, screw drivers and all the beer in the world will not let u install these monster tires on reverse cut rims. We tried and gave up... Took em to some big Tire place out on Britania Rd off dixie.. Took them a few guys and 6 foot prybars just to pop the inner bead onto the rims. 1/2 hour and $25 later, all 5 had the inner bead mounted.

Next we used Permatex Ultra blue for extra sealant and gluing power o n both the outer and inner beads..

Using 4 longer bolts to pull the ring down close enuogh to use the smaller bolts, we went happy with the air ratchet and torque wrench... 35 ft lbs is the spec for these bolts...

Once the outer bead was all bolted and torqued down, a bit more silicone and air the inner bead pops on real easy..

heres a pew poser shots... more detailed shots of the bolts and specialty nuts we used next week when I mount my boggers...

35lbs? I could swear that I've read reports of 8-10 lbs. Is my memory wrong or is there that much differnece from one make to another? What thickness are the rings?

simple place the nut in the hole on the inside and most of em stay there on their own till u start the bolt. Once the bolt starts, dem tiny teeth dig into the inner ring and they dont spin. No need for a wrench of nutin to hold em while u torque down all 24 bolts on each rim.

Looks great... do the math, so I can come pick mine up ;)

The big question though... are they street legal?

them self clinching nuts are nice for puttin shit together, but wait till the lil ****ers rust up, and you wannna change tires.

same deal as the rivet nuts we use on certain trucks, they spin when you wanna take em out, and you usually end up vice grippin em and drillin em out
