Hey guys i'm curious as to how many of you have broken or damaged gears, carriers etc. by having the side gears welded fozzy style. I have been doing some reading on the net about them and guys are talking like they grenade their rear ends everytime they put their trucks in gear or something, I have not experienced this with having them welded. Just curious.

i was welded front &rear....I broke an axle and a birfield (own fault). I personally don't like the fozzy welded diffs because of the back lash.
My 2 cents

If ur gonna weld, weld em solid... where the side gear meets the spider gear - both sides. Not sure bout zuks, but I know toys have 2 spider gears, that gives u 8 points to weld em up solid. Dont waste ur time welding to the carrier Move ur heat around so u dont warp the carrier, take ur time and let it cool down naturally and u'll be fine.
Welding up the front presents other issues like steering. With hubs engaged and welded front, good luck turning. Even when u manage to turn the wheels the truck wont steer very well since the outer tire is not allowed to spin faster... thats where u break inner axels and birfields. At least with a locker, when ur not on the gas, the locker disingages allowing the front to spin at their own rates.
dont think that by unluocking one hub with a welded front that u'll be fine. Turning the steering wheel is easy but u'll find ur rig pulling to the side ur hub is locked in and that gets real bad when u get a bit of speed going on say dirt roads.
Ultimate for front is ARB or electric, that way u can lock em up when u say u need em. but for that option ur getting into some good $$.

Depot is speaking fron expierence and one thing he missed, is that he has had power steering with his ventures, trials and tribulations.
No power steering ....... don't bother. either way. maybe if it was a locker i would think about it and then still do power steering first.

I believe we watched Greg move his lil ride around with those skinny chicken arms quite well and he didnt whine too much about it. He's on the 31" trxus tires and I dont believe he's broken anything yet he's gone alot of places.

I have found some difficulty steering only on rock piles. If my tires get jammed up it becomes an issue quickly. As for running mud and trails it seems to be working fine for me so far. When I swap in the toyota drivetrain I think I might put in the power steering too.

So there should be no issues with welding up the rear with daily driving the sidekick? I'd love to do this, at least have 3 wheels turning when climbing in sand/mud :)

the isssues that you will come across is premature tire wear
squealin tires around every corner
and shitty cornering in the winter
other than that weld her up

A, terrific, as this is a winter/offroad vehicle only. I drive a lowered vehicle in the summer ;) so tire wear should not be SOO bad on snow/offroad :)
Let the welding begin and tears run down my cousin's cheeks when I can outclimb his **** :D

Bah, I was just kidding, I've left to play in the woods many times... and then called my cousin to come get me out... last time was due to backing up over a log way too big and twisting my exhaust like a pretzel until the Zuk died. LMAO, I have nothing against ****s, they are great!
So if I should not weld it, are there any good limited slips for cheap? Rear mostly, and also front?

thatnks MM
i was refering the "whatever you say" to welding it up in the winter as being a good idea!
I can take the flack for owning a heep  after all i am on your site! :D
how much wheelin do you plan on doing this winter??
can you not wait till spring to weld it?
other wise get another 3rd member and swap them out????
or look into the lockrights they are a cheaper locker and would alow the rear to differentiate (sp) at least a little
good luck

Thanks for the post. So welding it will not be good on snow. I'm actually inquiring on lockers in another post. Can you explain to me how these work? I know limited slip... but lockers, and going by pictures I've seen, I don't understand how they work. Are there reliability issues with lockers?
Any info is appreciated, I want to be safe, but I'll be using my truck as a daily driver in the winter and offroader.

i have had a lockright in the rear of my 413 for over 2 years now,it does have a couple of things you need to get used to on road,it kicks a bit when you get on the gas hard and kicks the other way when you get off.if you are smooth on the gas pedal its ok.also when making tight turns it clicks and bangs a bit but you get used to it.
i used to have a welded front, which was disconnected on road with freewheel hubs.i fitted power steering and it was not too bad then.it tended to push on quite badly in mud etc,it wanted to keep going straight on.
i now have a lockright in the front too and is is not too bad on road and awesome offroad.
i have just fitted the lockrights and power steering to my new truck(LWB SAMMY)and it is reallygreat on and offroad.lockrights are cheap too.
Personally i would not use a welded diff on a road motor.
I LOVE MY LOCKRIGHTS. :D
