So assuming coils are outside of my budget this winter, what kind of setups do people reccommend for longer leafs and better shock absorbers??

cj or yj springs work well, or the CJ fronts in the rear/sammi rears up front is another popular swap too for the dual shackle setups,

be aware that you may have to change your spring perches, shackles, and spring mounts to accomodate the wider size, there are bolt on kits out there to make it easier but expect to pay the big bucks, your better off just fabbing it up yourself, and I know you won't have a problem with that :D

Bag it!!!!...I wouldn't use rear sammy springs just cause I'm breaking them all the time. go yj's.

My 1.4422 cents

Alright... YJ leaves seem to be the hot item.. what about a good set of shocks to go on them? Szabotage reccomends Toyota pickup rears (cheap!) with a travel limit of about 14".

Anyone else got any ideas?

I like getting as much info as I can before getting into something like this...

yeah I'm using 32270 monroes, off the toyaota 4x4 that have about 11.5 inches of travel 34 bucks each, but just recently I bought a pair of monroes that extend about 13.5 and are alot stiffer. they come from a dodge 3500 series 4x4 and they did cost about 60 bucks each

A stiffer shock could be bad with a leaf spring..

Remember, I'm looking for a better ride. No more kidney crushing for me! :)

the stiffer ones from the dodge 3500 are the same ones pete M uses in the rear of his machine, oh and a small correcton to the price of the toy shocks, they are 24 not 34 bucks each

But now we're talking about coils, and not leaf springs. Coils are generally softer to begin with, and they need a stiffer shock. Just the nature of the beast.

But 14"? I like the sound of that. I guess I'll just start wearing a kidney belt. :D

Shocks ? If it's an offroad only rig who gives a shit what brand, go cheap and long. Springs ? YJ's are popular but CJ's a bit shorter and much easier to install. YJ's require you to replace the spring hangers with one's that'll accomodate a 2.5" spring (CJ's are 2" wide like Samurais).

Keep in mind your 80" wheelbase, this does absolutely zero for ride quality.

And my sami rears up front work fawkin mint :D

Leaf springs? It's been so long i've forgotten how rough they ride. :yike Gotta love them coils. My truck rides better than a Cadillac when aired down. :D :D

I vouch for that, cause you let me drive your truck, or to better explain it you let me sit in it while it just inched it's way around while i turned the wheel.
It drives itself, now all you need is a T.V to watch. It's truly like a couch on wheels.
