yep I got busted after camping down at quinn lake this weekend, luckily I was parked at the trailhead, to air up and so forth when they pulled up next to me. I had no insurance on my truck so I had to get towed home, luckily no tickets were issued.
so just a warning to all that if you go out on the trail to be prapared, and stay sober if your driving

Glad to hear u only got a warning, but this means all trucks offroad @ the Quinn trail must be plated & insured??? just a bit confused here & hoping for some enlightenment.

I would think you don't need it on the trail but on the road to get home. But hey what do I know

actually you don't need insurance to do the quinn, it's not a marked road but the roads to get to the quinn are,(arcol rd.) and thus insurance is needed

actually if it is Crown Land you need insurance. If it is public property regardless if it is a road or not, you need to have insurance. There are lots of trails my way, and that's the way it is policed here, and pretty much anywhere I have been. If it's private property, then it does not matter (unless that's what the owner wants), but on public / crown land, you must have insurance and plates to operate a motor vehicle.

Repete and I were pulled over in Larose forest 3 weeks ago.
I didn't have my insurance slip on me because I had just insured the truck 3 days before (over the phone), I was able to convince the cop that they just hadn't mailed it to me yet.
He was happy about it either way. :bang:

the cop told me it was okay to take the truck into the quinn w/o insurance. I just have to have it towed there if I don't have the insurance, unless he was wrong

don't always believe what you hear from one cop, because the next one that comes along will bust you for what ever last one told you was ok.
i have a dirt bike and we ride at different tracks, you don't need insurance there, but you must sign a waiver, and pay to ride there. this covers the owner if i get hurt or anyone else that gets hurt from being sued.not saying that he couldn't still be sued, but it is harder for him to be.
anyway, most of the places you 4 wheel, you will need some sort of insurance, PL/PD is at minium, this will cover you as well as it will cover damages if some bad happens.with out this , you could be a sorry camper.
but i do know that what one cop says doesn't mean he is right nor does it mean that the next one that comes along think he was right either.

I agree, but if you are unsure, go to the MTO, and find out from them whether insurance is needed on public land. I have heard of cops letting you go, but some won't. And, as far as I am concerned, the minimum 5000$ fine is not worth the no insurance. I would at least have insurance, you can pay the 105$ no license on the vehicle fine without too much trouble, but that 5000$ will be worth more than the coil suspension or new boggers you want!!!

insurance for off-roading...hmmmm very interesting... why do i say this? i have talked to my insurance several times about the insurance on my zuk in regards to off-roading. they tell me that general car insurance is for general use only and that they do not offer off-road insurance. off-roading is not general use and if i had an off-roading accident i would have no coverage. this includes competitions like the UTNL, fair competions or anything else like it.
i pulled my truck off the road a few years ago due to emmission problems but was told i would need my auto insurance for trail riding. when i found out that this was incorrect i cancelled it because i figured why should i pay the 5-600$ a year to insure something that they won't cover in the end.
if what my insurance company is true we're all toast unless you have a specific off-roading policy. you can get that by joining associations that provide that through a proper insurance policy. these policies though don't cover you for road insurance for hiway use but atleast your covered on the trails which according to my insurance company we really are not with regular auto insurance.

well I plan to plate my vehicle as an offroad vehicle ( green plates) so I guess I can get insurance through the the same companies that insure ATV's and snowmobiles but before I do that I should ask this;
currently my truck is plated for the road but I haven't updated my stickers due to the e'test, lack of money and lack of driving I do on the road with it. so can I get insurance to drive it onto my auto insurance policy regardless of doing the etest and updating my sticker and be legit for the trail if a cop pulls me over?
I don't care if I'm not covered under an offroad policy as long as I have that stupid little pink paper to get the cops off my back

yes i have insured my truck with the expired sticker, and then used a trip permit.
I always keep fire and theft on it and when i want plpd i just make a phone call.
i insure it for a couple monthis inthe summer and just call for a few days coverage in the "offseason" they have never cared if the plate sticker was up to date.
I know that if i dont have any coverage on the truck thru the year it causes problems. might need a safty or insurance inspection. so for the 150 a year it sits with some sort of coverage all year.

this is what i was talking about when i mentioned assoctions before. northern lights and the assocation (upper canada?) that ovo is involved in both offer off roaders off roading insurance. both run differently but provide you with off road insurance. it is good only for off roading and competions not highway use.

...can I get insurance to drive it onto my auto insurance policy regardless of doing the etest and updating my sticker and be legit for the trail if a cop pulls me over?
Simple answer.... no and yes...
no - if ur vehicle is not properly plated with valid stickers, u can still get insurance but its not worth the paper its written on whether on or off-road. its the same rule as unliscenced drivers... say u lent ur truck to a friend who doesnt have a valid current liscence, the truck is not insured if anythign happens. 10 day trip permits are considered valid for those 10 days.
If all u want is a pink slip to show cops on the trail, then yes, ur idea will work, u may get grief about expired sticker and the cop may or may not know that insurance is not valid with expired stickers. its a gamble, but if u have a slip, ur that much further ahead.
I for one signed up with ovo and got their insurance. As a registered offroad vehicle, I have 72 hours to produce proof of insurance upon request - gotta like that rule :D

are we an association here??? let's all chip in for the $250 club fee and pay $10/insurance card from NL and be all happy/safe on the trails :D :D
all it takes for a club event are two trucks, right??? :D :D
we just did it over @ SOXC, but since I'm not going to be wheelin' my nissan anymore, I think I'll need a new card for the sammi :D
btw.. even with the NL insurance card, can cops still bother me about having no plates when on the trail? :bang:
