Most people I know keep the stock hubs as they are usually quite reliable. After market hubs are available from superwinch and warn but are more expensive then replacement stock hubs. If you really don't want to stick with the stock hubs I would recommend the Warn as I've heard some complaints about the superwinch hubs being weak.

I've never heard of a hub busting. ever. take them apart and clean them. then smear a bit of grease in there and go again. YOu should do this once a year. Iv'e had to do it, and a few others i know had to as well.
If it was "broken" from a rock or something then just find another stocker and don't worry about it, theyu just have to be clean to work.

Well i am just guessing they are broken????? When i took the drivers side off the spring came out in two peices and when i put it back in, it would not turn with out the aid of channel locks. My best guess it that it was gone for a shit so i dont know if i can replace just the spring or the whole assembly(whatever that includes). It would be nicer if i could just replace the spring, although with my luck its off to crappy tire to geta new one. Thanks for the input. Cheers

Get a new spring clean it and have fun. Oh yeah that part that you used the channel locks on to turn it to lock or free, take that out too. There is a c-clip that you remove and it will split the two pieces apart. Do not lose the steel ball. thats really important. then clean the rubber ring thingy and re-lube and your on your way to a smooth turning hub.

If you're still having problems with the hubs, I've changed my 98's (PLASTIC INNER PARTS that MELTED when my brakes ceased) to a 91's and they've been standing up to everything I've thrown at them!! I imagine the other replies are correct in staying with stock. I got mine from a wrecked sidekick right before they crushed it!! ($25 a piece)

I've got a hub you can have for 25.00.

Scrap yard! Stick with stock hubs, they do break sometimes, but usually only when the studs are loose. Consider them a fuse if yer locked in the front. On a trail I'd much rather change a hub than an axle on an IFS rig. If you upgrade to Warn hubs and they turn out stronger than your axles you what you'll be changin next!

Manuel hubs are so easy to rebuild. Don't do what I did, too much grease is not good. The spring inside will not pull back if over greased. Take one apart at a time so you can compare when putting back together.

T found the problem with them a little while ago, just forgot to post. It seemed the previos owners never took them apaert to clean them and when i took them apart they were full of crap!!!!!! I just cleaned them up in a varsol bath, put them back together a little grease and away i went. with the 4x4 workin again!!!!!

this sounds lazy but you really only need to look after one hub, keep one locked in all the time and just keep the other clean and working well. unless you have a locker, power always goes to the unlocked hub, very same as having both unlocked. on one sidekick i went a step further with the laziness and installed an automatic hub on one side and then left the other side locked, never had to get out, locks in when t-case is in 4wd and unlocks a little later when switched to 2wd.

anyway in my solid axle sidekick i find toyota hubs never fail me, they're aisin also but bigger and for some reason seem to be more reliable.

Only good with an open diff. And that locked hub will keep spinning yer carrier.

I'll revive this old post with a new question: Has anyone swapped in the later-model automatic hubs? Other than (I assume) strength issues, are there downsides?
