View Full Version : The guy that put 50 psi in my tire told me something else...

Our conversation went as follows :

Me : "Well, I know for a fact that my Suzuki has not had a new timing belt since 2 years at least. I will change it the next time I have a few days off work in a row."

Tire Dude :"Bah!, just wait till it blows"

Me : "NO WAY,if it goes, I will grenade my engine...won't I?"

1 yr. ago I was car shopping and REALLY looked into an Eagle Talon Tsi...and by all the reviews on the internet I know what happens to the engine when your timing belt goes...the pistons hits the valves and voila you have a big huge paperweight under your hood.

Tire Guy : "Nope, that only happens in certain engines... Not a suzuki, it would only end up in a "no start" condition"

Me : hmmm...so I guess that at TDC, my pistons don't travel high enough to strike the valves"

Tire Guy : (confused)........... "Ummm, yeah. Exaclty."
-----------

Hmmm, should I go back there and give that guy a shot in the face? Or is he right?

I don't really feel like punching anyone...but that can change in a hurry.

Later.

he is right that certain engines do have enough clearance in the head for that (for instance a 1988 Mazda 323, 3 blown timing belts, three replacements and each time ran like a charm afterwards), but I am not sure about whether the samurai is a non interference engine. Mudslug??? Fullload??? Muddmahine?
I would ask suzuki, or find one and take it apart and check... (just remove the belt and try rotating the camshaft or the crank...

From what I've read the 1.3L is an interference engine, not sure about the 1.6L though.

if you remove the timing belt and try turning the engine over, you might do valve damage,if the valves are open the piston may hit.never rotate the crank with the belt off unless you know for sure it is a non-interference engine

I think he meant with a breaker bar not the starter

it doesnt matter if you use a breaker bar or any method at all.if you turn the crank and the cam is not turning with it what do think the valves are doing....not moving.....piston reaches tdc and one or many bent valves

Sure if your cranking on the bar, but if you go slow and wait for the "click" you will be OK....done it before and I'd do it again.

Yes the valves are not moving...I understand how it works I have been building bikes and cars by myself since I was 9.

I think you have to go back a re read the post, the question was asked if the 1.3 was an interference motor and Super suggested pulling the T belt and turning the motor to see if it was or not. Agreed he didn't say "slowly" but I understood what he was getting at.

We are all here to help, not hinder......

Be nice clear your ice.

the 1.6 8-valve and the 1.3 8-valve are both NON-interferance motors.
not sure about the 1.6 16-valve or the 2.0

1.3's, and both 1.6's are non-interference, the 1.8, and 2.0 are interference engines though.

according to GM (trackers) the 1.6 16 IS an intrferance motors. no proof yet but the engine is close to going :D
