95 i think is the first for the 16 vavle....the plug wires go into the vavle cover on the 16 vavle....Ithink it say's 16 vavle on the cover also

if it's a 2 door is an 8v if it's a 4 door it's a 16v. also 8v are throttle body , the intake will have TFI on it , the 16v's are mulitport fuel injection the intake will have MFI

The first year was the 93 and it came as an option in the 4 doors only. It wasn't until later years that it was almost standard.
Lucy the 16 valve can be found in the SWB kik's as well but i think they started in 96 and the 16 valve can also be found in suzuki's sad attempt of the X-90. Too bad the X-90 did not take off better than it did, cause that would mean more donor motors!~

actually the 16v became available in 92 in the 4 door models, as for 16v's in the 2dr, think your right either 95 or 96 but they aren't that common. Van said the sunrunner is a 93 , the 16v was standard in the 93 4dr and unavailable in the 2dr thus the if its a 2dr it's a 8v , 4dr a 16v;). Still the easiest way for someone that hasn't seen both engines to tell the difference is to look for the "TFI" or "MFI" on the intake.

93 is the earliest year I can find any kick that has a listing for the MFI 16 valve. The 93's also had some overheating issues that were resolved by 94. Dont have any more details than that.
