It's an 88 Samurai but....

Besides the grill and the ebrake on the transfer case is there anymore proof that it is an SJ410? Like were it is written?

Also I understand they have 1.0L engine but how do you tell?

I know it's a kind of a newb question but it is bugging me.

Check your vin ...Hopefully Fullload will chime in here on that.Also look on the underside of the hood for stickers,they will have some tell tale signs;i.e. info.What does the dash look like? How many spokes in the steering wheel?How many speeds is the trany,4(sj410,)or 5(samurai.)If you have another zook around your area that you are sure of the year,look underneath...There are a lot of little differences.

Full plastic dash, 5 speed.

And I have checked with my 88.5. The park brake, driveshaft and grill are differant on my yellow one, then on my other one.

That's why I'm asking there's differances and simularities.

it looks like the whole front clip is sj410, note the narrow fender flairs and expose "body line", that stopped in the last half of 85 with the sj413.
The "body line is still there it just got covered with a metal flange to mount the wider wheel flairs like the rear of you truck has. This is why samurai fenders rot so bad, crap gets stuck in that space.

The mirrors are not sj410/413, probably the 88.5 as you think.
I would have a look at the motor again. If you have the 5 speed its most likely a 1.3, it will be marked on the block, drivers side, near the bell housing, close to the rubber timing hole cover over the flywheel. the 1.0 motor had a single sidedraft carb and a manual "winter" setting on the air cleaner.

Also look at the spring mounts to the frame, front a rear. on the 410 and the 413 the mounts a in line with the frame, on the samurai they are outboard of the frame. the 410 and 413 axles were 4" narrower that the 86 and up samurai.

Dude that's awesome , thanks

I'll check it out and let you know what I got when I'm done.

Don't go buy the front flares there off the 88.5

thanks again :urock:

The hood is not an SJ hood. Looks like it's from the 88

yep i missed the hood.
The hood is 85 sj413 and up. the 410 hoods are different, they are cloesr to flat with the middle depresed slighly. the bump in the newer hoods was to clear the carb.

If you go to the frame and scrape the mud and rust off you will uncover the VIN tag. It is behind the tire in the passanger side fenderwell.

Count eight (8) digits from the end (right to left direction) this letter will correspond with the year of the truck.

1980 = A
1981 = B
1982 = C
1983 = D
1984 = E
1985 = F
1986 = G
1987 = H
1988 = J
1989 = K
1990 = L
1991 = M
1992 = N
1993 = P
1994 = Q
1995 = R
1996 = S
1997 = T
1998 = U
1999 = V
2000 = W

I think in the 2000 + years they went to a numeric digit EG. 2004 = 4

hope this helps. You can even cross reference VIN's with the one on the dash and the one that may be on the inner foot well area on the drivers side of the truck. actually i think is is just under the factory door strap limiter doohickey thing. That should have a vin on there if it was a later model.

Worst scenario is that you have a later model truck with an 84, 410 frame and a newer model dash too!

If you read the Vin like a book (from the left side of the Vin to the right) it would be the 10th digit. :D

I was informed that my last post was a little unclear, so i hope this helps

here is an Example 2S3TB01C5M6879204

In this case the "M" would be the letter you are looking for which also = 1991.

they don't use all the letters

R= 1994
S=1995
T=1996
V=1997
W=1998

I knew they omitted the letter "I" and the letter "O" because they look too much like a number, and i guess i got carried away and "ASSUMED" that Q would be Ok...... but ya know. :)
