Anyone ever make a set of the bolt on (u-bolts) skid plate type diff armour? If so can you post a pic of the design you used. I want to keep it low profile because I use my rig mostly on rocks and don't feel like whipping out the hi-lift everytime I get on top of a pile to free myself hehe.

You could try something like this.

While it is nice, it doesnr suit our environment, I'd call it a mud catcher :(

Weld on some tabs, then use a 8" pipe cap or else just weld on the 8" pipe cap... practically indestructable....

Bardon Supplies Ltd. 377 MacKenzie Rd, Ajax. (905)427-7411 Quoted me $35.00 for 6" in stock, he has to order the 8", He said they are $40.00

Nuroc Plumbing & Heating Supplies 2050 Kipling (416)746-2171 They have 2 8" weld on caps in stock. THEY WANT $136.93 EACH. :bugeye:

Don't understand the $100 difference, but there you go.

BTW you get two diff gaurds outta each cap.

I paid 30 for mine... I got them from an old cobourg supplier. Will check if he has any left...
you can increase the oil storage area in the diff if you use one full cap on each diff, or you can be cheap like me, cut in half, add in a drain clean out hole, and add a fill hole....
weld on in 1" increments, and there you go... beauty is the weld on caps are already bevelled for a nice weld....

See! this is the zookpower we all need. Thanks for the info guys i will put this thread in my Fav's for future reference.
Breezeindustries.com also sells them ready to weld on for a little more dough. But for those that know how to use a band saw or a 14" chop saw it really isn't worth it.

hell, if it's nice out, you bring it by and I'll do it for you if everything is cleaned off already... (ie. I don't want to have to clean off any paint or oil before welding....)

Yes!!!! i'll go halves on it with ya. Just need to do the front of Zookvets as well. He seems to hit things harder in 1st gear than reverse, although you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at both front and rear!

What you guys gonna do to keep the mud out of them ? Id replace the pumpkin with the whole cap, will look almost stock, hold no mud BUT more oil

:D

More oil is good, especially when your diff only holds 1 litre :thefinger

I keep my zook broken down,or in a constant state of repair, thus never getting mud on it,or needing to protect the difs.

Zookvet can have fun scraping out the mud with a screwdriver. He still has to get the hang of draining diff fluid and oils without covering the whole damn shop.
It's either he takes it a little easier on the ole truck or cap the damn thing. It's getting capped.

I understand the whole thing about getting more oil but, i'll look at it in this retrospect. More oil means more money. sure it's only a couple bucks but if you swap gears and re-build and break stuff over the course of the summer it will add up.
When we just re-build his front end the oil was clean and clear. it was a waste not to re-use it.
In all honesty it does not make sense to do the front diff when it does not turn when in 2WD and hubs unlocked, therefore no heat transfer.

The rearend would be a better go but for the two or three times a year you change the fluid why bother. Any vehicle was designed to drive down the highway with the desired amount of fluid and not be bothered. Reccomended changes at 20-25 thousand. Any zuk would be lucky to hit 2500kms before the diff fluid gets changed.

Lets say you suck in 1/2 a liter of water. Now you have 1/3 water 2 parts diff fluid. If you hold 2 liters, it's 1 part water, 4 parts diff fluid. True about mileage, I ran alot of miles, if it wasnt for the extra liter........ I wouldnt have made it home a few times.

Diff breathers work wonders and easier to install. If anything goes wrong from there, like the thing pops off, etc then you'd figure it out in a hurry and take care of it. Also if you do not have diff caps and have that much water in your fluid i have been told that it will froth up like too much soap in the washing machine and you'd see a trail of foam. you'd notice if you had that much water in your diff.
I'd still rather have 50% water in one liter of gear oil than 25% water. Still cheaper and you don't have to wait as long while it drains.
