LOL, i just posted this about the 86 tin top!
1.6 16's are all puter controlled.. not much to play with.. so start with ur basics....
fuel filter, air filter, plugs, cap, rotor wires and timing.
Also, if shes been sitting for a while, u'll need to drive the cobwebs outta her. Give her a good dose of super unleaded, maybe throw in some gas line water remover and injector cleaner.

I'll do all the ture up stuff tomorow.
Just thought i would check to see if there was anything common that was different that the 8v efi.
Is the 16v mass air
or speed density like the 8v

Check your MASS air flow connector right behind your air filter, those things make every truck run different. Mine will not idle at all and depots will spit and sputter and run like a bag of dirt.
Pull the air intake hose off and have a look at the throttle valve butterfly and see how much carbon is in there, it may have to be cleaned with a tooth brush and some varosol, as it may not be getting enough air around the plate at idle and the ECM is trying it's best to pull air in else where, just to keep it running.
Double check your check engine light to see if the bulb still works and do a diagnosis, to see if the engine picked up any trouble codes.
My thinking is the guy that sold it may have had a dead battery or even disconnected it before you came to look at it and it ran fine for the test drive till the Ecm found a problem which now makes it idle like crap.
Who knows! new truck. keep us informed.
