HELP! I give up. I did a total rebuild on my daily driver -98 tracker. I love designing and building drivetrain and suspension but I'm a spaz when it comes to motor work. got the head planed and put in new rings after honing the cylinders. Put it back together, for some reason i didn't check the timing when i took it apart. No prob, got a haynes manual. It says for 16 valve, set the crankshaft sprocket by lining up the tooth above dowel with the mark on the motor,(that tooth is also marked), for top dead center. then set the cam sprocket to the timing mark with the "E" under it and put the timing belt on. Then set the distributor button on number one,(which is the top left one on 16 valve). The distributor rotates counter clockwise, (not clockwise like 8 valves), so from top left, plug wires set to 1-3-4-2 counter clockwise. The cylinders are numbered from front of motor to back -1234. So I did all that, wouldn't even try to start. fuked around for hours? days? it's all a blur, anyway, thought i might have bent a valve by starting it out of time. Got a compression tester, 1-122lbs. 2,3,4-150lbs. seems allright i think. Flooded bad?, changed oil and spark plugs-nothing. went to my 93 sidekick, the engine is seized and i couldn't turn the crank. so i took off the timing belt to at least check the valve pulley to the distributor button. When the timing mark "E" is set to the mark on the top, the button is nowhere near number 1. SHIT is the book wrong? when i put the "I" timing mark to top, the button is turned close to an inch to the right of number 1. So, went back to my 98, set valve to "I" this time, set distibutor 1" right of number 1 - nothing. set button 1/2" right of number 1, nothing, set button just to the left of number 1, it sputtered and kinda started. will run at extremely low idle if the pedal is held right to the floor. Tried turning the cam sprocket "I" just to the left and right of the mark on engine- worse. there is spark, lots of gas right at the injectors, (not frozen etc.) and I have no idea. My brother ran a scanner on some stuff awhile back but didn't find anything. does the timing sound right? are 98's a different than 93's. My distributor has an electric plugin instead of a center wire is only real visible difference. Does anybody have any ideas?
