Ok guys for a long time now ive been procrastinating on this lil project until i could decide exactly what i want, the susp is done but the motor has always been a thorn.

So anways i've made up my mind and was hoping those of you in the know might offer opinions as to some thoughts ive had.

Donor Motor:

1.6 liter 4XE1V 1588cc (98 cu.in.) SOHC 12 Valve
Bore x Stroke 3.15 in x 3.11 in / 80.0 mm x 79.0 mm
Power 90hp@5,800rpm
Torque 103lb.@4,200rpm
Compression Ratio 9.1:1

It's pretty much the same FI as the 16V with wiring to match, only the harness is REAL easy to manipulate into a stand-alone system.

Now, the car was donated, and to add more confusion to the matter the 1.8L 16V DOHC (Power 140hp@6,400rpm Torque 120lb.@4,600rpm) will bolt rite on, and 2 local junk yards have the heads, for cheap...would you??? Remember this is a 1600 Lb truck lol.

The tranny will be a breeze, as will the baby lobster, and the mounts are pretty much prepared, the motor has a P.S. pump and from my readin an FJ box is the perfect mate for this rig.

Flame away, give yer opinion if they're valid, but if yer Iq matches yer tire size head back to General Dribble :thefinger

Hi Sarge,

What would the 1.8l be coming out of, that sound interesting.

K.I.S.S

Use the 16 valve sohc 90 hp and be happy. Don't swap heads if there is no need. Get the truck running and then decide if there is enough power.
I have a totally stock 16 valve and have no power lacking issues.100 hp stock. Depot has the K & N filter and a header and still spins 35 x16.00 boggers and i can light up my 36's at will.
If you want a little more power you can still easily upgrade to a filter and header and be in finiancially better shape.
Or then swap to the DOHC.

If you say that the harness is not an issue than keep it simple, install it and wheel it,and/or drive it to the beach ( cause it's a show truck)

I can only grab 5th gear with 36's and 4.30's and toys on a flat surface. I think 90-100hp with 5.13's and 33's will be overkill for the 1600lb truck.
You'll be able to pass cars at will.

Use the 16 valve

12 Valve actually ;)

And i do see yer point about the Kiss theory, but if this is more of a mall cruiser and less of a trail bruiser, (by no means a show truck) the 1.8 head might have a lil more wow to it for me and its also a matter of clearance, i dont want to set this engine up in the compartment and then have to change the whole dynamics of the build later.

What would the 1.8l be coming out of

1992-93 Geo Storm GSi/Isuzu Stylus RS

I'll be using the 1.6L 12v block and if i do decide to partake in the swap the 1.8 16v head, so the specs wont be as exact as stated for the 1.8 as the bore is the same but the stroke is 0.43 in longer and the compression is 0.6 higher in the 1.8 block.

I'm not lookin to roast the 33's or make any land speed records as the wheelbase is roughly 74 inches (ack!) But i want to look back at this build being content with what i did, i plan to be buried in this thing!

Am insane here or is it worth a try??

I look at things this way. I'd rather drive the damn think then look at it in the garage while i try to figure out what timing belt to use from the 12 valve SOHC to the 1.8 DOHC. That right there will be lots of time and money back and fothr to the parts store? Head gaskets are expensive and what if you ruin one in the process and which gasket do you use and then you have to get it all leakdown tested and honed etc.....
Keep it simple and drive the damn thing. Then next winter or ten winters down the road you can expieremnet whne the time is there.

Can't show it off in the garage. ;)

Can't show it off in the garage

If i gave a shit about that i woulda left the stock motor in it, but i dont.

I do however suppose you are correct in the fact that as in my own words i plan to keep it forever then 5-10 years down the road maybe there will be a bubbler system thats usable for larger engines so i'll go another route, or not, whats the fawkin rush, just drive the damn thing. Thanks fer the reality check bud!

That rite there is what i call a useless post :upy:

i dont want to set this engine up in the compartment and then have to change the whole dynamics of the build later.

Plan for the future, go ahead and install the complete 12v the way it comes outta the Geo. Justd make sure you set it low enough to clear the intake, etc for the 16v DOHC and far enough forward for the Dizzy.

1.8 as the bore is the same but the stroke is 0.43 in longer and the compression is 0.6 higher in the 1.8 block.

Can't do anything for the displacement (stroke) but you could always shave the DOHC head a little before you bolt it on. But the only way to tell for sure is to cc both heads while thier off. Maybe the 12v has a larger combustion chamber and that's why the compression is lower. What type of pistons are in there? I'm sure the 1.8 DOHC are flat tops and the 12v are dished, more compression variables.

I'd put the 1.6 12v in now, the price is right, wiring is easier, running sooner. Then you can pick away at the other dodads until your vision comes to ya. Get it drivin now, make it super purdy next. When the flash gets bigger than the bang, then start thinkin about a wiring nightmare of a bling blig engine. Who knows what donors could come your way in the next few years.
Lots of options keep em open.

Well said man, cheers

Tween u and Full i think you've got me convinced just to stay with the complete donor motor. Damn i should give my head a shake sometimes. As it would be great to drive it all this summer it is a project and sometimes life gets in the way, and with that doing it the simplest way heighten my chances of being able to use it more. That being said, i've got werk to do, so less typing more wrenching.

oh footnote. This truck is nice but its not as perfect or as clean as ya'll think it to be. It will be seeing light trail duty but its not like im going to follow You guys up pinion pass with it or try anything excessively challenging, i just wanna make it a nice rig to cruise up to grand bend or up to Toronto or as Dyno and i are talking about, attaching out mini pop-up tent trailer and driving the 10 hours to suzican and sticking with the slightly modified class to enjoy the trail so much as to get some adrenaline seeking thrill ride by following Depot, FullLoad, Muddmachine and the like, mind you i change my mind like i change my underwear

Again, thanks fer yer support, if you want the buildup done on a thread here, and its ok with Mudd, ill start posting progress by this weekend.

i didn't read all the posts but my vote goes for more power :D
i spent 3ish years piecing together the motor thats in the orange car you saw.
I could not afford to plunk down all the cash on all the parts i wanted at once. Let me tell you it was worth the wait, and the day i fired it up was one sweet day and defintaly worth the extra time.

NOthing is better than alot of power in a lightweight car/truck :D :D
