I have been watching this forum for a little while and I like most of what I have seen.

I am farely new to Zuks, but I seem to be getting educated on what not to do and what to do. Being a newbee, you can make lots of costly mistakes.

I am just finishing putting YJ springs and 33's on my zuk. Still have a completely stock 1.3L, but have changed to a 6:1 transfer case and 5.13 gears, locked front and rear, and power steering.

Some may have seen me still looking for more gears. I have 2 buddies which are just starting to do the same. Just trying to help them out.

Well since Muddmachine is not here and i think Medusa's computer is temporarily down i think it is not my duty to welcome you to the board. Ummmmm i guess i just said it but what the hell!!!!!!!! welcome aboard.
On another note you have 33's with 5.13 and a 6-1 t-case. what are you doing??? Drag racing turtles? anyway sounds like a decent rig for the Cali rocks but it's a little different here. I am having a hard time with 31's and the 4.62 in the axles and the 4-1 case. Too slow for most ontario stuff. Now i have to go bigger tires to make up for the gearing. (yeah thats it!!!! make up for the gearing)
You say what makes it to slow? well take a nice rock climb. something that'll give you a challange but you know that you can walk it. then go to the wife's flower pot and throw all this top soil all over the obstacle. then add a sprinkle of water and moss. That'll give you ontario's scene. There are some guys here that rock crawl with the rev limiter. (ahem they know who they are :upy: ) but here's a good typical pic.

I took it out yesterday for the first time with the new gearing. It will still reach freeway speeds.

Most of my zuk driving is off road, some rocks, some winter time snow & mud. After all hooo's racing?:)

Don't listen to Fullload, gear it down to the bejesus and just crawl. Hes just upset because people with lower gearing get in his way and he can't "point and shoot" offroad...hee hee

Welcome to the board:ban:

nutin wrong with point and shoot philosophy :D

but I have to agree with full on this one... sure it'll be fine on the highways, 33's and 5.13 on a stock zuk and u have 5h gear back, im not sure what the high range reduction is on a 6:1 case but it cant be more than 20 % can it? but u will still have good highway speeds. Its when u stick in in low 4wd that u might find urself running outta gears - ie spend all day ripping around in 4th and 5th screamin the motor to keep up with the pack. - i had that problem with my 4:1 and 5.29's and for some reason the zuk trannys dont like being ripped around in 5th on the trail - I've chewed a couple trannys up like that. but we each have our different preferences - I'd be curious to hear how u like that low low range of gears for the wheeling we do up here and I've be even more curious to see how well ur locked front end holds up with 33's - have u supped up the birfields or anything? please do report back and let us know how it all works for yah

gl and welcome aboard

What I have is Petroworks GRS2, 4.89 to 1. I thought it was lower, but I just looked it up and it is not 6 to 1.

I am concerned about having to run the higher gears, I will have to see and I will let you know.

I'm not pissed at the people with lower gearing. I'm pissed that i do not have larger tires. I have this problem that the tires will not physically go over what i want them too. Then when i need the momentum to do so i cannot get it. I watch people get the wheelspeed that they need where as i just don't have it.remember i have 31's and the 4-1 case. 95% of the time iv'e noticed there is some type of lubrication on the obstacles. This is not California or the southern states that have high traction.

You must of never been in So. Cal. We may not have a lot of mud, but we have lots of loose and dry sand, dirt & etc. Getting traction is a major problem.

Some of the hill sides are so slick with loose dirt, you can hardly walk up or down without ending up on your back side.:uk:

We have one hill named "Ball Bearing Hill" that explains what I am talking about.

The grass is not always greener on the other side.

I have had a Detroit E-Z up front for a year. Works great but does cause for steering problems.

The biggest problem is turning with the power on. With out power steering it was a bear.

The only other problem is do not run at all with the front hubs locked on payment. It just want to go straight and I am concerned about braking axles.:(

As far as getting traction, it did improve, about 25%. Not as much as the rear locker.

I hope this answers your questions.

yah havnt broken any front axels or birfields yet with the front locker?

No problems yet.

From what I have been told, the birfields are the strongest when the front wheels are pointed straight ahead. They are the weakest at a full turn, especially in reverse.

The best way to break them is apply lots of power, while in a full turn and the tires stuck or getting air and landing with lots of power and getting intant traction. So far I have not done either of these no-no's.

Maybe others in the group have had other problems that I am not aware of and maybe I've been lucky. I am not usually the one with any luck.

Hmmmm Locker up front with 31" boggers. sounds like fun. Hey mudd!!!! you wanna hook me up with a favor. Should be fun for a bit before i go toys. Just to expierment it thats all. We could use this as an ummmmm education thing. I'll beat on it thing till either i break a birf of break my arms trying to steer the thing. Then i can report to all on my mishaps or accomplishments!!!
4x4 Buddy you do have a point with the sand on the rocks. But before we say that one is tougher than the other i should try it first eh!!!!!!!!
