I just found this picture the other day. :D
This is the setup I was doing last year before I bought a travel trailer. Needless to say I can't haul the Zuk around anymore. Being not road legal, (due to insurance right off) it sits in the garage or I get someone to haul it out to where we are on the weekends.
90 F-350 diesel - 6" lift, 35's & firestone bags
72 9.5 Vanguard (aka The Eldorado)
74 27' Kustom Koach traler - already stripped down and we put a deck on it.
A buddy of mine owns the sand rail
Total combined weight for everything was about 17,000lbs.

Doesn't that piss you off?? We got an area of forest just outside the city (Ottawa) that seems to have the same problem. Love the setup though, looks like what I'll be needing in the new year since I bought the wife a Samurai and we'll be trying to haul her's and mine to events next year. (It's a good thing I got two tow rigs for now :D ) I was thinking of building my own trailer, but may pick up something already done, was thinking tri-axle float, but the weight was my concern. I can probably build one lighter than one of those puppies. Besides, I'll be hauling two Samurais not some honkin heavy backhoe! On a side note, I just found out that my buddy that has a tilt-n-load (it has the rear wheel lift on it too), is planning on selling it in the new year......now that would be sweet, only problem is the damn yearly inspections required on anything over 1 ton.........but if the price is right.......plus it'll werk mint for when I run my demo derbies!!

To figure out the total amount of weight you can haul and tow is by looking through your manual or on the truck, for the GCWR rating. For my vehicle the Max. GCWR 20,000lb.
The truck is 7,500lb. with a payload capacity of 2,500lbs. Max Trailer weight for towing is 10,000lbs. with an equilizer (weight distribution set-up) including the 1,000lb. tongue weight.
For add comfort and handling I put air bags (w/onboard compressor) rated for 5,000lbs. Reason for that is because I put a 6" lift on the truck. When loaded up, the overloads were not making contact with the bump stops. Plus I really don't like having my headlights pointing up into the air. I like a level ride and look.
As for stopping, no problem. It just takes a little more distance. People just gotah stay out of my way. :D

Must be fun on wet days!!! You also have to look at licencing problems for said truck and trailer. Once you pass a certain weight, your into dealing with the MTO. Do a search on here. It has been covered in depth.

But with the camper in the back does it not become an "RV"?

As for licensing issue's, you do require a commercial ticket of some sort if you are towing anything above 10,000lbs. as per the D.O.T. But it is a grey area in the RV/Trailer towing industry for private use, and it is not monitored at all. Right now RV travel trailers can be as much as 18,000lbs. Gross Weight fully loaded.
Oh... and get this, there are RV shops all over the country side selling these trailers and not advising the new owner that he is not license to pull the trailer nor is his truck equipped to haul the thing as well. I'm so surprised that the insurance company (ICBC) will even allow people the insure such a thing without being qualified to tow it. :yike

Haven't heard that one before

Shit  I had a big long angry message and i could not post it.It simple said that Most people that I meet towing a trailer are qualified.I tow a large(23')trailer regularlly all over Toronto, and have no problems. And I also don't think that i should have to go get a special licence to tow my 29'fifth wheel .Do you really think that only truckers should be able to tow a travel trailer? What about towing your atv, monster offroad buggy,or two.Or maybe a big ass boat? Lets not ask for more regulations

I agree with you that you don't need a special license to tow your 29'. But I sure wouldn't want a 19 year old with a few years of driving under his belt, to be haulin 12 - 18,000lbs. down the highway that hasn't been trained for it. That's a disaster waiting to happen. The law of physic's and basic driving skills are thrown out the window when your haulin serious loads like that.
I've seen just about everything from a 5th wheel hitch mounted to the trunk of a Cadillac with a trailer, to people haulin 28' trailers with a Ford Ranger. And yet these pilons are the ones that are causing traffic problems for guys like us who want to get out for the weekend to wheel and have some beers! :fri:

What is even scarrier than a 19 year old is a 75 year old with bad vision, pace maker and the onset of alshiemers (sp). I am also not concerned with the RV guys as much as the others who feel that towing two trucks behind an Astro van is safe.
Once he pulls out the slide out, is it legal? Sure the buggy looks light, but say he hauls another Zuk? Is it legal?
I just ask that people are familiar with the law, and stick within the boundries. Aslo to keep thier shit maintained and safe. Does the trailer have brakes? Are the brakes funtioning properly? Are the wheel bearings greased and in good shape? Are the chains on correct? Is the correct ball and hitch installed? Are the lights working?
Every time one person gets pulled over for unsafe practices, it looks bad on all of us.

You see it all the time tho, buddy and his wife, 3 kids in a minivan thats loaded to the tits and a big ass camper trailer or 28 ft cabin cruiser. Usually they look like the type who have never picked up a wrench or put air in the tire. I like at them and think to myself... "is he totally oblivious to the dangers Im seeing?" Of course he is.
