anyone know the laws on towing 2 trailers?
They would be small, 4x8 each max. Each weighing under 2000lbs loaded

yes two trailers. One behind the other
Well i have a car trailer already. But is a big pain to get out when i only want to move 2 ATVs.
I have room to keep and easily access 1 4x8 (seriously nothing bigger) trailer, and my frined has room for another 4x8 trailer.
i was gonna build them, and put a hitch on the first one, to pull the second one when we want to take both ATVs.
And i can use the small trailer on it;s own behind my car or Sami when i only want to take one ATV
so what are the Laws? Is it even legal to pull 2? do they both need brakes? One needs brakes? can't do it at all?

off hand and Im not too sure bout this but I think first up u need a D liscence. All tailers must have brakes at this point. the first trailer must be rated to pull a second trailer - ie - its structure designed for the added hook-up, which Im sure ur trailers arent.

I did find somthing interesting abotu that though
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/regulations/trailers.htm
"where a trailer transmits to the highway a total weight of 2,800 kilograms (6,173 lb.) or less, that weight shall not be included in determining registered gross weight"."
As for the trailer, hows steel price going? The deck for that one alone cost me $400
But $$ talks :D

hahah, that was a copy and paste. I have been working alot of hours so i am dead tired and not typing nearly as fast i normally do lol
As for the black plate, i thought the black palte was issued to any truck, not just commercial? Friends truck is registered and personal use (insurance would not insure him without getting that changed onthe ownership) and he still got black paltes

hey ZC, that 2800 kg tramited weight is the small trailer excemption I've often spoke of.. thats what keeps most of us zookers like fullload from entering CVOR range with his 16' trailer.. all he has to add to his truck reg weight is the added tongue weight.
ur also missing something i said bout trailers being built for another trailer.... ur 1st trailer is a car hauler... it is structurally not designed to be pulled on from the back and the ball on its tongue is prolly not rated for another 2000 pounds... It doesnt matter what ur actually pulling, its what it rated for that counts.

A guy i know used to pull 2 trailers (camper trailer and attached boat trailer) - the restrictions he found were:
1) 1st trailer must have trailer brakes
2) Must be pulled by a commercial vehicle (black plates)
3) total length (truck + trailers) cannot exceed 75'
He said he had more hassles in the US then he did in canada - but it is legal as far as i know.

Also found this in the HTA vehicle permits here:

in the case of a commercial motor vehicle, other than a bus, the combined weight of the motor vehicle and load or, where a commercial motor vehicle is drawing a trailer or trailers, the combined weight of the motor vehicle, trailer or trailers and load but, where a trailer transmits to the highway a total weight of 2,800 kilograms or less, that weight shall not be included in determining gross weight;

ya gottcha. Neither of those trailers are what i want to double up on.
The doubles will be scratch built to handle the weight they need to handle.
Basically 1st trailer built to handel 4,000lbs, second trailer good for 2000lbs

My father in law just got fined in Florida for pulling a 5th wheel trailer and a 14' boat. Does Commercial mean " black plate" or " Yellow Sticker"?

Coomercial vrhicle is any vehicle that can carry a load - ie a pick-up truck, cube van or vehicles like GMC Safari or Astrovan that is not full of seats. All those vehicles are capable of carying cargo and are by definition comercial and automatically get black plates.
The yellow sticker is only an anual inspection that says ur vehicle is safe to drive on the roads and is required for all commercial vehicles with a GVWR or actual registered weight or actual weight of 4500 kg or more.
Yellows are also required for business trucks like jo-blos roofing even if its not over 4500Kg.
Im betting ur pops got nailed for being overweight with such a big load... His fifth wheel trailer and boat trailer prolly exceeded the 2800kg small trailer excemption which means his trucks registere weight shoulda been high enough to cover his truck, his load (including passengers and fuel and beer), his 5th wheel trailer with its load and the boat tralers load. All that would put him ovr 4500Kg which would require yellows on truck and each trailer, a CVOR here inOntario and a USDOT# for the states AND a RN# if he travels through PQ. CVOR and USDOT are both free but RN's cost like 100 bucks a year from Quebec.

I jsut finished yappin to MTO bout some stuff and got some info on ur 2 trailer thing...
must be a commercial vehicle (defined in stickie)
entire combo of trucks and trailers can not exceed 23m or 75 ft.
load levelers, dampers and class 3 hitches are strongly sugested
here's where they nail ur ass to the wall... Sway regulations... Section 618 of the HTA. I havnt read that nor do I plan too but mto guy did tell me that there are limits to how much ur trailer can sway side to side and if exceed that, ur toast. he also "suggested" using a 5th wheel as the first trailer and that helps lessen the sway effect but there is no regulation prohibiting 2 trailers both on balls or pintows.
