View Full Version : 22r with 20r head swap. opinions?

well guys, just wanted to pick the brains of you all and find out a little more about swapping a 20r head onto my 22r. what goes into this process? i did a search but couldnt seem to find anything. a couple of questions i have are
1. direct bolt on?
2. what is the reason for the swap? i know its a dumb question but is it better flow or higher compression rev higher or what?
3. which carb should i use 20r or 22r stock carbs? do they bolt up or do i get a carb from some other car or truck?
4. what can i expect from this swap? hp or ftp? trying to make my sammy a little faster on the hills. thanks in advance for all your input. any links too would be great Bri

Yes, up to 1982 22R (double row timing chain)

Better flow, the ports are shaped differently, and yes more compression.
3. which carb should i use 20r or 22r stock carbs? do they bolt up or do i get a carb from some other car or truck?
Your best to use the whole intake from the 20R (port shape)
4. what can i expect from this swap? hp or ftp? trying to make my sammy a little faster on the hills. thanks in advance for all your input. any links too would be great Bri

Does the 22r have a bigger carb ? And if thats the case why not use the bigger carb?

Your HP will increase, but low end torque will suffer... look at LC Engineering for tips and tricks...

Can you quote that? I read through all those links and could find no info on lossing torque. I don't get how higher flow and higher compression can lower your torque output. Maybe on an 84/85 block, due to the deck height.

Opps, I didn't read his question. I meant use the 20R intake manifold with the round ports that match the head. I'd definately use the 22R carb. (electric choke is better)

Most of the links say somewhere that the boosting of the compression does have a loss in torque on these specific engines. Also, from what I understand, the reason they supposedly made the 22R head the way they did was for torque.
I am looking for the link with the best info... I have it on my home cpu, but not here... so I have to remember when I'm home...

I don't really know why... just know what I've read. Apparently the flow in the 20R head = horsepower, and the flow in the 22R head = torque... gotta read up on it more to know exactly why...:question:

it would be worthwhile for you to upgrade your block to the older double row timing chain and steel guides. When the factory plastic guides fail on these engines the timing chain quickly eats through the water jacket causing big problems. They are just about the only thing that does fail on these engines. Then you can put your 20R head on.:D

In June of 85 toyota went to a 2 inch longer block for the 22R. If you are planning on putting a 20R head on a 22R make sure that the 22r was made before June of 85. You will also want the intake and carb off the 20R. I have a buddy that did this swap and he ended up on haveing to use the 20 intake and carb with the 22R jetting. it did work good once it was done, But it isnt as easy as they make it out to be.

i thought i read that the block had to be 85 or newer. mines an 84. will this work then? i cant seem to get enough info on which block i need. thanks. and what do ya want for the head? should i assume you have the complete head intake and carb?

For my 20R heads to fit a 22R, The 22R has to be made before June/85. Your 84 Block will work with a 20R head shawzie. I also have 2 heads with the intakes/carbs still attached to them. Make me an offer. A coupple of years ago I used to have 9 running toyota pickups at my parents farm, Had 2 others on the street and enouff parts to build about 3 more.lol. Now I am down to 1 with few parts and I am thinking of selling it. :(
