Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of whats involved in swaping a subaru birf into a sami axle?
I've heard that is what Trail Tough does for their axles.
They come from the subaru 26spline?, same size as samurai rear axleshafts?

I have heard of this but never actually seen it done. Give it a shot and do a write up...
I would like to see whats involved because the stock birfs are getting hard to come by and the Subaru ones are supposedly stronger.

I emailed TT a while back about these axles. They said :
"No, they are NOT subaru birfs." They are K7V axles, or some shit like that. The samurai axles are K6V. Umm, OK. But they are 26 spline. Someone on Pirate recently was bitchin that they broke one and not even pushin it. Found it hard to believe.

These K7V cv's, any idea what they come out of? They're a suzuki part?
Anyone played around with cv's to see what will fit in the samurai knucle?

You know, im the last one to try to convince somebody out of trying to keep Zook running gear, but if you are concerned in any way about strength and durability, have you considered the fact that the amount of money you pour into Zook axles would probably be the same as doing a toyota axle swap?
just my 2 cents

Yep I agree, I can understand the point of trying to keep all zook running gear but you can't polish a turd.
Toyo is the shiz for axles.

Yes, I agree, if I were to spend any money it would be going into Toyota axles, but I can't see doing that for just 31's that I plan to keep running.
Had no plan of spending money in the first place, just curious what was involved to make that part fit. wouldn't care how many hours it would take, just as long as it doesn't cost anything :)
Thanks, I'll keep an eye out to see what's out there.

I'm considering the Toyo axle swap, but what years/trucks are recommended? I'm sure it's been asked/answered here before but I couldn't find my answer

85 and older are solid axles in the front. I think 85 is the only year with the beefy trussing....................?

When you guys say that they late 84's and 85 have the trussing, are you talking about under the front differential trussing the long side of the axle or is there something else to look for?

I think that all 80-85 front toys have the trussing - just that the 85 has the beefiest (and late 84 i guess too)

The early models look puny......... If thats some ones idea of trussing....... they need another engineering class.

As it has been said before, all the trussing on the late axle is a a PITA because ya need to torch it off and put it on the correct side. It hangs down like a sob!

So any early 80-85 is what I'm looking for right? Are they all the same from pick-up to whatever? Anything special I want to look for?

85's with the big truss plates and the heavy drag link bar is what you want.
Try and get two fronts so you can make a high steer kit too!!

Ya, guys your right. The late 84's(july and later) and the 85's are the strongest, but lets be real. Your putting a pretty stout axle(even if it's an 83) under a real light mosheen. Your not going to have to many problems.
The perfect pair of Toyota axles are the front from an '85 and the rear out of a '95 V6 4-runner with the stock electric locker. The locker works well and the V6 has a stronger center section. It's a little bit wider though. Get some off set rims and your unstopable.
Take it from a real big Toyota fan.

On my shorty I had the Trail Tough birfs with 4340 axels. I ran 35" boggers and never had birf trouble.
