I've been offered a set of Toy axles from an 85 4runner for $400. Is this a good deal. What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Atticus

300 is the average going rate for a set of toy axels. 85 is the best year u can get for front axel trusses.

It's about $100 too high but if they are complete and out of the truck it might be worthwhile.

Check the knuckles for signs of leakage and make sure the balls aren't too rusty or pitted or else the wiper seal will never hold off the water from seeping in. Also check the brake calipers to make sure they are not seized and that the dust/splash guard isn't rusted completely and about to fall off.

In the rear, check the emergency brake levers to see if they are moving freely and pull the drums off if you can. Make sure the wheel cylinders are not leeking and that the backing plates are still solid.

You shouldn't expect all this to be in good condition but keep in mind that you can easily exceed $400 in parts to replace broken/worn parts.

Hey bud, just so u know these arent bolt n go, yer gunna spend a few hundred on brakes, and gears, not to mention sterring and whatnots, it does become quite an undertaking so make sure you sit down n budget for it....u know how to get a hold of me

Oh I know Sarg, I've been reading about it. I was originally going to do axles and an engine swap next winter, but I was talking with TF on MSN and he offered me these axles. Well I was thinking it could be an over the summer build. Have the axles sitting in my garage and slowly put them together. The only thing I'm a little worried about is the front passenger perch. Than again I was thinking about your Hybrids, but I think 5:13's would be a little too much with a 4:1 and 33's. What do you think? I just wanted to know what a good price was for Toys.

What motor swap are you doing? a 1.6 fuel injected? Ifso then i think (somebody correct me here) that with a 4:1 case and a 1.6 the 4.11's that come in the axles would be a decent gear... but lets do the math.

the basic formula for tire sizing matching to gears is:

New Tire Size
-------------- X Stock Gearing = Optimum new Gear Ratio
Stock Tire Size

So from memory i think a stock sami Tire is a 205/75/15 which equates to 26.3 inches and stock Samurai's (SJ413's) had 3.73 gearing

33 inch tire
----------- X 3.73 = 4.68 gearing.
26.3 inch tire

To add to it you have 12% reduction in hi range with the 4:1 case which will further equate to the feel of 5.14 gears at the rear tire. So therefor, using the toyota 4.11's would equate it more to 4.60's with the gear reduction of the 4:1 case. only 0.08 off of the optimum gearing.

....however, your unsprung weight is now more and that lil engine is pushing harder, so in my eyes, the 1.6 swap would be a nice setup fer yer rig.

on a side note, if you daily drive this, then the 4:11's are good, but i think in my opinion that you can never have too much gear,so anything higher the the 4:11's are even better for off road/trail driving.

I've sold them anywhere from $125 - $250, depending on year and shape...

I come accross them once in a while, but just depends on what there is at the place I look...

Tood bad you are so far away, I could point you to the ultimate place to get them... You remove them and they are super dirt cheap....

Mudslug got a pair there, and I've gotten a few pairs there... only pita is that you can't use torches, and you have to carry them to the front gate... buddy doesn't let many people drive back there.

I haven't been there in a year, but a few people have asked me for axles, so if / when I do, I'll post them up.... or drive down and try out your luck at the yard...
