A can and spacer is advisable to get the correct load on the entire carrier evenly.

I was told by a guy in our area that is suppossed to be some kind of Zuk expert that you have to modify the carrier or some shit to get it to work. Are you saying that I can rip out the 3:73's and just bolt up my tracker gears with no other mods????

He is most likely talking about the can and spacer, 1) A kics ring gear is substantially thinner then the samurai's. So in order to place it into the carrier so it is centered CORRECTLY and you get the proper mesh between it and the Ring gear you need to use the spacer to do it. 2) the Can is just that the Kick ring also has a larger Inner Diameter so you need to have the can to hold the x-pins in place.
There are people out there that claim it is not needed they will adjust the carrier over using the the bearing races and spanner nuts, this can and will eventually cuase problems because there is uneven pressure being put onto the carrier. also you will never get the proper wear patern. NO WAY NO HOW. Now there is alot of guys that will do this and say its ok but have (ei) nothing to back up ther claim other then I did it and it works. Like I said,, for now, i am not trying to be a NA sayer but these are facts, i setup R/P gears for 7yrs in a factory for ZF. It doesnt take much to destroy the gears if they are not set up correctly. Examples too tite of a back lash will cause exsesive heat which in turn makes the gears brittle and eventually they break. Some say well they will wear to the correct tolerence (maybe but then it is too late, you have already caused the damage. there is more too just throwing them in and calling it good. Tools needed to do the job correctly a depth micrometer, 1"mic, an inch pound dial indicating torque wrench, magnetic base and a tru dial indicator, you get the pic most backyard guys dont have that stuff. and if they say they dont need it to properly set the gears up they are fooling themselves. Now i am sure I just stured it up and thats ok with me because it is fact not myth. You can do what you want and most zuk guys will WHY cause we are cheap, But it least know all the facts before yiou do it.

Listen to the above poster (RockRat), he knows of what he speaks. Should you doubt his creds check out his site or look for him at Pirate. I, for one, am glad to see he is around this board, I plan on using his knowledge in the future. Good luck on the R&P install...
