When I get a Samurai I plan to wheel it hard ( This is killing my Heep) . So I will want big tires and all things needed to use them .
I had big plans for the Heep and have lots of parts to go in ... like a set of Dana44's with 4.88 gears .
I need to know the center to center distance between the front springs and is it possible to widen them out with an adapter ?
I also have a Dana 300 T case ... Can I divorse it or adapt it to the Sammy trans ?
Or is all this a shitty plan ?
I have the axles almost ready to drop into a YJ and they would be bombproof behind a 4 banger .
Any thoughts?

Whoa! Ok, Sammy's do so well because they are light, light and agile. You really don't need much more than what they come with unless you intend on going full plumb dog crazy nuts (a la Depot)

D44's are nice axles but you do not change the springs to fit the axle, you change the axle to fit the springs. Push the sping perches in to match the Sammy spring placement. The narrower stance will give you better articulation through shear leverage.

As for the D300 sell it and buy lower gears for the D44's or a 6:1 gear set for the Sammy T case...you will be farther ahead.

Don't worry about the innocent looks of the Sammy, the actual performance will suprise the hell out of ya.

Heck I took my SJ up Greens in stock form and had no problems

FYI a stock SJ is 29 inch tires, 1 litre motor and a 4 spd tranny...

well u know I have to say something now! :upy:

I have a spare set of D44's outta a scout but U wont see me put them under my zuks. I swear by the toy axels. the D44's are SOOOOO freakin heavy it aint even funny.

Toy's come stock 410 (411 in some year) and u can get em 456 (or is it 462) outta another years 4-runner or u can order 529 or even 589. I had 529's nice for rock :)

springs - yeah like slug said.. move ur perches - dont pull a heep move by trying to use an adapter - cut off ur old perches and weld in some new ones.. u say u wanna wheel it hard? then build it right.

no such thing as bomproof behind a 4 banger - thats a heep myth. I've blown up just about everything on my zuk cept the toy axels and even they are starting to razor in the rear now - and I run a 4 banger... it aint the size of ur tool that counts.. its what u do with it :boot:

I have to say something here... automatic toyota's had 4.30's stock... I have a set at home now if someone needs them. I have had two auto 4 runners, an 87 and an 89... both had 4.30's.

4.56's I have only ever seen in the SR5... of which I had one .... it was an 89... so... unless people were changing gears in them before I had them, that's what I would be looking at..

according to the richmond gear catalogue (online)

toy gears for the 7.8 " (commonly reffered to as 8 inch) are available in

3.90, 4.10, 4.37, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29

It shows a 5.71but only available for the 7.5" IFS member

that covers the 4x4 truck and 4-runner from 79-85 front and rear

and the 4x4 rear, 4 banger without turbo and 4-runner without turbo in the rears for 86-98

West Coast differentials (http://www.differentials.com/catalog/index.html) shows the following

4.11, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29, 5.71

all available for the 8" toy thirds.

For some reason randy's ring and pinion site doesnt work on my machine , this is what they tell me that have via the phone..

3.90 4.11 4.56 4.88 5.29 5.71

thats all 4 now

FYI do NOT go with the 5.71, apparently the pinion is very small and prone to failure....as in BOOM!!!

ok. Depot, you stole what I was gonna sugegst. I know for certain that Quality Gear sells a 5.71 as well. I also know for certain that many other manufacturers / wholesalers have 5.71 and 5.89's.

As for pinion size, hell yeah... they do get small at 5.71
