I've got my hands on a 4:1 T-case but I don't know if it's from an SJ 410,SJ 413, or an LJ. Can anyone help me on what I'm looking for to swap into my '89 sami? Does it look like my oraginal t-case or does it look like a square box? Does anyone have a pick?
P.S. He says that it's from a 1979 SJ. Was there ever one built?

if it is a square box then i can say with most certainty its a 79 LJ80 case, remember, LJ diffs are centred not offset, whereas both SJ's and Samis are offset, the LJ case will have tranny input shaft directly above the output shaft for the front drive shaft and the rear driveshaft will also be centred.

LJ cases are 3:1 low range, and 1.9:1 high range. These can be installed in place of your factory jack shaft giving dual cases. There is some work involved in making it all fit though. I've seen two done this way with good results.

I still have that LJ case you gave me Steve.
Looks like I'm not going to be doing the conversion afterall however... So who needs an LJ case? :)

Thanks for the help guys. The one I'm looking at is an LJ. What kind of work is involved in putting this into my '89 Sami?

except when the bolts shear or the flange shears... apparently there's no room for bigger bolts either, right Bigzook69??

I'd guess if he sheared the bolts off, they wern't tight enough to begin with. Same for the flange. Get new bolts, nuts and most importantly ensure the lock washers are in excellent shape.
Either way, it S/B fairly simple to make beefier flanges. Turn the factory mounting surface off on a lathe and press it into a 3/8" plate with a hole bored too match, weld er up. drill and tap one for larger bolts and then you don't have to worry about trying to squeeze a wrench in behind it to get at the nuts.

Yeah, except according to Bigzook there wasn't enough clearance to go bigger, cause then it would interfere with the casing next to it...

I follow you. I was saying make it thicker, not larger as in diameter.

That sounds like it could work... as long as there's enough room to put in the longer bolts without anything behind them interfering... He is redoing his truck based on those troubles.... not sure if he tried that approach though...
