I removed all the ductwork plumbing for the air forward vents in mine ( it only blows cold air, not heat). now I have room to mount my power inverter, amplifier, autostart/alarm unit and auxilary relays. I now can use the old vents (the round kind) to mount my oil pressure gauge, fuel pressure, and any other auxilary gauge nice and flush in the dash
my cb radio is mounted on the roof right in between the seats.

like sza, i too removed all of my duct work and modified my heater core to have a little bit stronger defrost. Kept my stock dash and left the radio where it was. The 6x9 speakers are mounted in a box on top of the rear wheel wells (i have a tin top so the sound gets to be unbearable with just 2 speakers). On my old soft top I mounted them on the top bar right next to the seats. Get rid of the bench in the back and put a bucket seat in the back, this leaves you room behind and next to the seat for spare part storage and tools. If you buy gallon containers of oil or brake fluid they fit perfectly under the hood between the fire wall and front wheel well. The best interior mod was my late 80's heated leather volvo seats. They are super comfy and sit you up a few inches higher then stock so you can see out over the hood.

Hey Joey I also have a 88.5. I took out the clock and the small pocket in the dash above the heater controls and made myself a piece of aluminum road sighn into a guage cluster. i will attach pic. worked out nicely for me.

I built a stereo box for my truck. It's an '89 softtop. I simply used the two bars that mount the windshield frame to the targa bar to mount the box. It sits up above the rearview mirror, and is completely out of the way.
It holds an amp, and two speakers to which i just plug in my MP3 player. No skipping songs(Like CD's), and it's all high up, so I don't have to worry much about it getting wet.
I also run a handheld CB, which connects to an 8" flexible antenna which is mounted to my targa bar by a magnet.
I made everything 100% removable so if I park the truck downtown (Ottawa) I don't get crackheads and homeless people trying to steal from it.
I'll snap a few pictures if you want. Just PM me.

im going to eventually build a dast, copy a design i saw online. take everything out and build a newone out of aluminum or sheet metal...whichever my bank account allows later on.
for now, cb is under the dash at the steering wheel, and deck had an insert for it, speakers...i just made a spot through the particle board, and the rest is just sat in it and found where i could put things...not much room!!

I haven't changed the dash yet, but what I did in the back has worked well for my needs.
After removing the rear seat and stripping the whole back half, I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood that comes close to the seat backs and just before where the wheelwell starts to flare out. I bolted that to the floorboard and then added a solid place to attach twin dog leads. Its a twin leash design and they are each a foot long. Thats attached to a steel coil cable and that is attached to a leash that runs to the passenger grab bar. It keeps my dogs in the truck if they see other dogs or deer in the woods.

The amp in the picture has since been moved to a waterproof location. When the dogs aren't along for the weekend I can stack gear closer to the front and utilize space better I feel.
