I recently finished my spring over on my 86 Sammy. Everything is fine in 2wd but in 4wd I have a vibration and a little clicking coming from the front end. Before the spring over there was no clicking in 4wd/2wd. Also it's very hard to put it back in 2wd after driving a little in 4wd (It's like somthing is binding and I have to sort of force it back into 2wd). I tried lifting the front wheels off the ground when this happened and the wheels kind of turned back like they released the binding. After this it went back into 2wd easy. WTF is causing this?

Just to clairify I have fixed hubs and no driveshaft spacers yet. All perches were welded on parallel to old ones. Spring are stock all around. I tried to lift the wheels and spin everything looking for binding and all appears to be fine. What am I missing???

are u on dry pavement? it sounds to me like ur loading up the front more than the rear for some reason and thats y it wont let u disengage easily.

it could be something as simple as ur front tires are a tad smaller (more worn out) than ur rears or vise versa.

as far as the clicking, u need to narrow down where its coming from b4 we all start guessing but Im betting its the splines in ur d-shaft.

...Im betting its the splines in ur d-shaft.

I second that. I would also double check both the U-joints on that shaft.

Yeah..I'm doing this on pavement. I have the fixed hubs so even in 2wd everything is turning up front right? Just not under load...I betchya it's the front splines. It looked like there was 3" or so of spline engagement so I figured it wasn't that causing the problem. I'm just testing things out right now. Trying to get it driveable. I better get d/shaft spacers soon.

Hey dude!
Did you tilt your diffs on the perches at all? You may have some binding in the front yoke of the drive shaft, this would cause the clicking.
As for the pressure in the shifter it is likely your tires not sized the same. It will be noticed more on the pavement

I didn't tilt my diffs at all but there is no binding at the front yoke..It's almost pointing straight at the t-case. Mudball made a picture of his, and mine is basically the same. Here's the pic....

After I did my SPOA I notice some vibes, there was more stress on my u-joints and they were the problem. But I wouldnt rule out splines also.

I had the same issue after my spoa I couldn't drive in 4wd after 3rd gear from a driveline wobble and if the hubs were on I'd get a clicky friction noise.

I lived with it for almost 2 years and only drove in 4wd on the trails, til about last month I built a custom length driveshaft and lowered the front output of the t'case a tad. doesn't seem to do it anymore

Well I put Zookvet's driveshaft spacer on but I'm still getting vibes in 4wd. But in 2wd no vibes. Thing is, I have drive flanges on the front...shouldn't I get vibes all the time and not just in 4wd? Also the clicking when in 4wd didn't go away with the spacer so I pulled the front short axle, looks ok nothing busted on the birf. However I have oil in the steering knuckle and the birf was oily with no real grease in the balls...could this be why it's clicking? It still had some lubrication from the oil. I know it shouldn't be in there but...the clicking sounds like something busted. Any ideas?

My solution is that I am now building a CV front driveshaft - double cardan style.

I'm cutting the crossmember out, and building a new section to it that will go over the front DS, instead of under it.

I see...I'm going for cheap but the $$$ keep climbing  If I replace my seals and regrease the birfs do you think the clicking will dissapear? The birfs look fine...a tiny bit loose, but not broken or cracked.

same problem here, in 2 wheel drive no problem
in 4 wheel drive after 2nd gear sounds like grinding
i even went so far as to drop BOTH driveshafts
from the t-case and run it through the gears while not moving
same thing happens, could it be the short shaft between the transmission and the t-case, or, should i just drive it till something falls off.

I don't think it's the jackshaft if it's fine in 2wd

I have the driveshaft spacer kit from Breeze and I put one of the thicker ones on the front and the thick and thin one on the rear shaft (I thought that's where they were supposed to go). I was wrong. I had the same problem with noises and vibrations so I took the thin shaft spacer off of the rear and put it on the jackshaft with some new U-joints and the noise and vibrations are gone. You might want to try and get them, It might solve your problem?

I don't see why you would put a spacer on the jack shaft if you didn't move the tcase... It just doesn't make sense...

I think that either your angle in the front is too much, or something is a bit pooched in your shaft or tcase...

How high were your spring over axle spacers???
