View Full Version : t-case strength?

After trying to drive the samurai last weekend, I have found that both the gearing (4.16, 5.29s) and the power (stock 1.3L EFI) isnt enough to turn the 37s. I have been looking at a few options, one of them would be to put 16v with an auto, kick case to the sami case. (kicker 3 more then likely) If I would do so, should I worry about the sami case, because of the added torque attributed to both the engine upgrade and the added 1.8 from the kick case?

you will need to build a bucket like the Kong to hold it together.

strange to hear that it isn't much power, I saw frwinks' zook on a similar setup as yours, his truck worked awesome!
definitely some sort of t'case bucket should be added even with the 1.3

ya dude... you need more gear:brows: stuff some 6.5's in that case with a TrailTough MIghtyKong and yer 1.3 will spin those 37's all day long;)
I'm on 37's, 5.40pigs, 6.5tcase and 1.3efi and until that motor blows.... I ain't fukn with this setup :D

Ya that was my other option, which is cheaper and easier.
You arent having power issues at all?

I honestly can't remember a situation this season where I needed more power;) Don't get me wrong...a kicker set up is a beautiful thing, and one day when my truck grows up it'll get one fer sure;) :D For now, I'd throw more gear and strengthen the mounting on your tcase and give that a go...I think you'll like the results

well i just got in from the shop and i jumped up and down on the tcase until i was outta breathe, had a smoke and started jumping till i was out of breathe again, picked it up and threw it across the shop, and it's still in one piece....so yeah they're pretty strong.

yuk, is this a huge issue for the higher geared sami cases?

ehhh, I've snapped 3 f those front output shafts off and thats with a 4:1 with a 1.6 16. The reason they break is cause the coupler does not engage fully and aluminum cases flex just enough to stress that shaft.
best fix - shim the front output so thats its closer to the rest of the gears in the case that way the couel ring engages more of the teeth.. never broke one since I did that fix. I used that brass coloured shim from inside a sammy case - u know the one on either end of the rod that holds the center section of gears in place - little trimming and voila... someone else here has done the same since I came up with that.

I think we did it in both Frwinks and Zookvets rigs when we did the swap to 4.16 and 6.5's just for safety and it was apart.
Although in my stock 84 case it wasn'tr done and to date there has been no probs.
To be fair I don't think it will be too much of an issue due to the kicker 3 that marries everything and allows less case flex.

i think the only reason why i broke it is because at suzican i broke a passenger side limit strap and over flexed that side causing bind in the u-joint,might have been it only thing i can come up with. i did bring it to mud's place like this in augest and wheeled it,i never changed it till i got back..
