I have a grinding noise in 4 hi and am not sure what it is. I done some research but can't find any thing like it.
When in 4 hi travelling at speeds above say 20 or 30km it makes a grinding/rubbing noise. I know noises can't be diagnosed by words but any ideas?
I don't seem to have it in 4 low but I am never going that fast in low range.
Can it possibly be the axle off degree a bit?
I have also been getting some mean death wobble latley. I tightened the wheel bearings but it still does it. From what I can tell everything seems to be tight....
Any help/ideas would be great

does it come in on the decel or accel? or is it there all the time? Does it go away when you push in the clutch?

There was a thread about front end vibes recently here on ZP. Being my old truck I can tell you what is goin on. The angle of the front drive shaft is the issue. Dont drive it in 4hi. I went thru the exact same thing when I first had that truck.

Steering... chances are the drag link rod ends are worn out. It's a z-link. You need a hi-steer set up. Bigger tre's would help too. Secondly, are you still running the thornbirds? The more a tire wears down the more out of balance it becomes.

I can build you a custom drag link/tie rod setup utilizing 1/2 ton TRE's that would never wear out. I also have some custom steering arms which would eliminate your z-link along with the bump steer.

If you wanna drive this on the road full time, I'd be considering some radials instead of those bias ply thornturds. PM me for my new phone # if you wanna talk.

Edit..... has the front end been rebuilt since mrjc or you have owned it? If not you could probably use some bearings and stuff. These things dont last forever.

Most of the noise is in decel...

I am wondering becuse I still want to drive it in the winter a little bit and I doubt that thing goes anywhere in 2wd in the winter...

I would love it if you could build me a steering set up, I figured that is the cause of most of my issues. I drive on the street mostly to get to the trails :) I can live with the unbalance. I am still running the thornbirds but i don't like them, I am putting swampers on friday., stickin with 31's for now, I ran 33 daytons for a while but I lost too much gearing I think...

I havn't rebuilt anything yet but I did adjust the bearings last week or so, they were not too bad and still clean, but soon I am going to give them a good overhaul, btw do you know what size socket it is??

how much slop do u have in ur front d-shaft splines? This usually causes massive vibes and noise when coasting but goes away when acc or dec hard.

OK, your not understanding me about the tires. I also may not be explaining it correctly. They could be out of balance and they could also be worn down alot. Once a tire gets to 50% it sucks ass on the road. It doesnt run smooth. Im not saying this IS your problem, Im saying that it's likely a part of it tho.

Worn tires + even partly worn front end parts = death wobble.

While I still had that truck I was gonna drop the front of the tcase a bit. The noise you're hearing is d-shaft. It's quite the angle. Even if it's a good drive shaft, running at those angles wil loosen it up soon enough.

Okay, I get what your saying now, which makes sense because I didn't have the wobble with the new 33's I was running...

I know there is some play in the splines of the driveshaft also....

So buy the looks of it it is nothing major which makes me feel better :)

I will look into getting that axle re-indexed also that should help allot.

The angle of the spring mounts are off a few degrees, now I was either going to re-do them or simply get the angle and add machined shims to correct it, I have a few machinest friends that can do it for me.
