I am not sure about a 2.8L to the sami case, but I know Lightning 4.3 Conversions were running 4.3s and 200R4 infront of the cases for their swaps. I have seen 3.8s infront of them before and they were holding up. Are you keeping the stock gearing in the case?
As for Dana 44s, waggy diffs are offset to the passenger side. Alot of guys run centered Toys and use a hi-angled (usually stock pre-ifs toy front) cv driveshaft to compensate.

Scout 44s will have the correct drop in the front, but the rear diff is centered. Depending on who you talk to this may not be a big deal.
I have a stock Sammy tcase behind a 435 and a GM 151. It is holding up fine.
