this isnt the greatest way but if your careful you can use a screw and run it into the seal and then use pilers to pull it out

You mean put the screw into the rubber part of the seal? Won't that just rip the rubber when you yank on it?

get urself a $5 seal puller from princess auto - damn things werk mint... t shapped tool with 2 differnt ends on it. either that or a long screwdriver and go through king pin bearing race holes... shove the screwdriver in there and set it behind the edge of the seal and give it a few good whacks.. just be carefull not to fubar ur king pin bearing race.
Then get urself a seal tool.. we have the plastic one.. coems with like 15 diff sizes taht u mix and match for different seals.. Well worth the 20 bucks.

Is there a way to get the front axle seal out of the housing without removing the whole knuckle? I have the birfs and axle shafts out but I just want to replace the small seal that keep the diff fluid from getting into the knuckle. Any ideas?

Just an update...I bent a flat scredriver in an L shape and it works great. Poped the seal right out. And it worked on all the other seals too. Cheap seal puller. :)

well if your replacing them, I used a hammer, the nail puller side, works very, very well.

Thanks for the tip. I used the bent screwdriver because I wasn't removing the knuckle (less room to get in there). Came out pretty easily. I thought it would be pressed in harder.

I have a 87 Samurai, with what I believe are stock axles. I have a leak at the rear axle seal. I pulled the axle shaft and backing plate and am trying to figure out how to change the seal. According to "Rear Axle Shaft, Bearing, and Seal Suzuki Samurai/Sidekick/Tracker 1986-1998 Repair Guide" from autozone.com online, I thought the seal would be in the axle housing and after pulling the axle I would just need to pry the seal out and replace it. I do not see a seal in the axle housing. It looks like there might be seal where the bearing is on the axle. How do I change this? do I need to pull the bearing???
I know....I probably should replace the bearing while I have the darn thing apart.
thanks bill

I think it's the same as the front axle...pressed into the housing. This diagram might help.

thanks fullspectrum. after looking closer at the housing and the bearing retainer, it looks like the oil seal would have been in the housing and the bearing retainer slide into it when the axle is put in. Now....I don't know what happened to my oil seal. It is not on the axle or in the housing. I pulled the axle in the yard and moved the axle with backing plate into my garage, so it possible that it was on the axle and somehow fell off, but I sure can't find it. Anyway, I think I see where the oil seal goes in the housing. One other thing though......I looked into the housing with a flashlight and I saw something near the differential housing that looked like it fell off of where the axle slides into the sides. I'm not sure what that piece is, but I tried to retrieve it with a coat hanger and it fell into the diff housing. I haven't had time to mess with it after that, but I'm thinking I may need to pull the 3rd member to retrieve it. Does anyone know what that part have been?

update. I pulled the other axle and that side has the oil seal right where it should be, in the housing tube. I'm thinking someone stuck this together without an oil seal on one side just to sell it. anyway, the tpiece that I saw in the diff housing is actually a little plastic piece that goes right behind the seal. It was broken and have been pushed all the way to the diff housing.
