I've been doing some searching and haven't quite got everything staight. So here's the question: i have a 1985 (prod. date 11/84) SJ413. I believe that it has stock 373:1 Diff gears? Is there any complete third that will bolt up to my axle that has deeper gears? I keep seeing stuff on 462 gear swaps. What are these gears out of and would they work on my 413?

Sorry for such newb questions, just want to get it clear.

Thanks

If you have 85.5 the axles will have 3.73's gears, also you will have a 1.3 liter engine and a 5 speed tranny.
Any year sammy third will fit in there and yes the 4.62 and 5.12 sidekick gears swaps you can read about will work.
The axles are same spline count and size just shorter, and the brakes are different.

Just watch you do not do what I did the first time. I had my Spool in one third and after installing it, found out that the Flang to bolt it to the Drive shaft was different. I was not aware at the time that there were different sizes.

sorry to hijack here but if the kick third will go in a sammy how light duty id the sammy third as I have a freind who only highway drives and wants taller gears. I would trade a set of 4.12's for a set of sammy gears if they were 3.73 he never wheels so if there weaker he does not care.

The front thirds are completely interchangeable between Sami's and kicks. The Sami front third is stronger than a kick front third due to it being cast iron and the kick unit being aluminum. The rears are not interchangeable, but the kick one is stronger due to the lsrger ring gear. To gear a Sami, you need two front thirds from kicks (this means two donor vehicles), the front is a direct bolt in, the rear requires you to reuse you original Sami side gears due to differernt spline counts on the axle shafts. You should just swap the front kick R&P into the sami cast housing. The kicks front thirds do not oil the pinion bearing adaquately when installed in a rear end. Another option is to use the whole kick rear axle giving you a bigger ring gear, bigger brakes and larger bearings.

gotta love the knowledge on this site..Thank You. canadian_zuk. with this I guess I could find a sammy front axle and make a steel front IFS.

Quite a bit of work there. The kick, being IFS has mounts cast into the third housing as it bolts rigid to the front cross member, The Sami, being SFA does not. BUT, some Grand Vitara's came factory with a full steel IFS housing and third that would be a direct swap.;)
more good info!
