Background:

In the summer, I bought a complete Acme vw-samurai diesel conversion kit from technofarmer on this forum. He packed everything carefully, and even took pictures of everything so I could see how it went together.

I had a 1.6 turbo diesel from my mother's old jetta, and I gave it a going-over with new gaskets & seals, but no didn't pull the head or replace bearings because I knew the engine and it was pretty sound.

Well, I took last week off and dove in. I'll spare you all teh details, but it went really really well. I'd recomend the Acme kit to anyone interested in a vw diesel conversion. It is first-rate.

Anyway, after all the work I fired it up last night, and it is running really well.

It didn't at first... it was blowing tons of blue smoke, none at idle but lots and lots when revved. Took it for a spin, thinking it just needed to be run, but it was still making a huge cloud of smoke; it was embarassing. My heart sank, I thought I had put in a crap engine (it was out of my mother's old jetta and it never burned oil like that before).

Once it was warm, I decided to give it an italian tune-up. I started gently, then MASHED IT in second and then third. The smoke actually caused cars to pull over, someone flashed their lights at me.

Then, I heard the turbo spool up and the smoke stopped.

I think the turbo was sticking, causing high enough vacuum on the intake that it was pulling oil past the turbo seals. Once the turbo freed up, it stopped completely.

Anyway, I feel a LOT better about it now

A few outstanding issues:

- I get a rattle when I let the clutch out... in gear or in neutral. Doesn't sound right
- I broke the nipple on the heater core, and now it leaks badly. Had to bypass it. How hard is it to change the core? I looked under the dash last night, it doesn't look like fun
- Stock suspension, I had the springs re-arched and another leaf added to clear the oil pan. It is still only 1 1/2 inches from the axle. Will have to put longer shackles.

How's it pull?

How's it pull?

It pulls very nicely. It feels completely different, and I drive it completely different. I used to rev it to 4-5k all the time; with the diesel I'd say I'm shifting at 2500-3000 tops. So it doesn't seem as quick, but if I revved it a bit more I bet it is faster. Those 1.6 VW diesels are nice revving engines anyway, I'm sure once I get used to the racket I'll be shifting at 4k.

The torque is really nice, it is really nice to put your foot down in 4th or 5th and actually feel it pulling.

It does seem to cap out at ~100 kmh... once again, once I'm used to the noise I'll probably wring it a bit more. I think that's 3k rpms.

I really need to get a set of lift shackles though, the oil pan is very close to the axle.

With a few little mods 6000 rpm is possible!!!!!

I yi yi

In my Jetta's 1.9AAZ, I see 5k sometimes, and that's without the governor mod... just more boost, GTD injectors and increased fueling.

I'm gonna keep this engine pretty much stock, it's well used and the head's never been off. I think it will last if I take care of it, but could get trashed pretty easy with abuse.

Only upcoming modifications to this engine is a conversion to run cooking oil, that's why I put the diesel engine in it.

I was about to ask if there was any more doing the diesel coversion. Good to hear your happy with it.
The rattle you hear in the transmission is normal to me now. I guess the power pulses of the diesel are much sharper than the gas engines, maybe a heavier flywheel would stop that. I have around 4000km on mine so far. I top out at about 90km/h, 4-1 tcase with 29" tires.
Canola oil works well mixed with the diesel. I leave that for the warmer days.
What starter motor are you using?

I believe the starter I got from technofarmer was from an automatic sidekick. It doesn't spin it real fast, but my battery ground cable is the stock one... swapping that out with something serious might make a difference.

As for canola, I've been running two tanks in my main car for over 3 years... I'll do the same stup in this. I'm looking forward to it, it will mean I'll be driving it A LOT more.

Yep it is a sidekick starter from an automatic.

Glad to hear you are up and running Jake.

Cheers

Thanks brent!

The pictures & instructions that you included with the kit & parts made a huge difference, I would have really struggled to figure out some steps without them. I appreciate you taking the time to do that.

All in all, I'm really please with this conversion. Just have to lift it a couple inches and deal with a couple small oil leaks. Oh yeah, and fix my heater.

I have a 1.6 TD for mine as well. just need to order the kit.
Mine won;t be stock for more than a day after it;s running though haha :D

Well, I can't say enough about the acme kit. It is absolutely first-rate. You have a bit of grinding & cutting to do here and there, but other than that no real fabrication.

I am going to let the engine "settle in" a bit before I start modding. I've had a bit of "post operative bleeding"... oil leak from teh turbo and some coolant Ts leaking a bit. Then today I had a heater line pop clear off and I lost all my coolant on the way to work. No biggie, I was 2 minutes from where I park, and I think I just forgot to tighten the hose clamp.

Gonna put in my veggie oil kit this weekend! Yeehaw!
