Way too much work for the Hp gais in my eyes. sure you have plenty of torque but you are looking at a major major conversion.
Rocky road has a kit that will explain all of the details that you need and sjkrawler on this board may be able to help you if you have the time and resources and knowledge to do this.
Other than that buy a 1.6 16valve and be done with it.

ya i just noticed it on their website.
The kits is $800 US but you still need a shit load of other parts that probably cost another $500 CDN, and the 1.9T motor is about 200 -2700 dang :(
If i could find a 1.9T motor in the $1000 range it might not be so bad :)
the older 1.6L motors are only $500 or so but it;s jsut not a diesel wihtout a trubo hahah

I have a few blank adapter plates here (vw to samurai tranny), holes need to be transfered.
There's a kit made by Acme adapters, I believe it comes with everything you need.
Lots of info here:
samuraidiesel@yahoogroups.com -Acme adapters is on there.
For the conversion here I used 89 vw jetta turbo diesel, adapting it to an '86 zuke tranny with Roadless gears adapter plate. samurai starter and alternator, tracker rad, 4psi electic fuel pump, nothing fancy but it works.
Are you thinking of doing the whole conversion yourself?

the 89 jetta Diesel has a Turbo eh, hmm
oo look at that about $750 for that turbo motor
Ya i would do it all myself :)
How do you like it? Better than gas? Or just different?
Cold weather driveablilty good?
And what do you estimate it all cost you?
Thanks :)

I think it's pretty cool having a small diesel 4x4, so yeah I like it. The accceleration isn't much more than the stock 1.3L, but the torque is noticeable. It's different, and I like that too. I don't know about the cold weather yet, I did the conversion in the spring. I assume it should drive through the snow pretty good since the diesel added alot more weight.
It costed me around $1200, truck and all.

what gears do you have, jsut stock?
I have 456 gears, will that be too high?
Right now ont he highway doing 110 i am at about 4500rpm. Does teh diesel even rev that high :)
How much did the motor alone run you?
do you have ot flush teh fuel system to get the gas out?

It's all stock gears with the '86 samurai tranny (~0.796:1 5th compared to 0.876:1 on later than 87 models, something like that. pretty sure it's a 0.1 rev. difference)
For the rpm's, yes it will rev that high, but that's about where the rev limiter kicks in. They're tough little engines, wouldn't want to rev it that high for a long time.
A fella who was really into vw diesels came by to see the conversion. He was looking to put a vw diesel in a Lada. Anyways, he drove in with this beater diesel rabbit. 500k on the engine, not a thing done to the engine other than frequent oil changes. He says he revs it to 5000rpm before he shifts, since it's a bit sluggish to begin with (non turbo).
Must be a huge amount of stress on parts when you figure it has around 19:1 compression.
I got the car for $350, from my brother though.
Yes, you must get rid of ALL the gasoline in the fuel system.

it sounsd really tempting.
I was looking at some specs and it has a forged steel crank, pretty cool.
i just gotta find somewehre that has info on upgrading it. I figured i could just add a front mount intercooler, turn up the boost and have some fun but i need too find out what the injectors can handle and what the motor itself can handle
I know the 1.9T can put out somthing like 300 ft/lbs of torque

I run mine everyday. Works great. I'm running 33's with 4.11's. The 1.6 turbo's will run up to 5000 rpm the 1.6 na will run up to 5500 rpm. Mine's intercooled I plan on turning up the pump and instaling a tuned up set of injectors.

do you have a link where i can read up on how much power they are capable of, and how much injectors cost?
thanks
KAC
November 20th, 2003, 11:32 AM
I don't know of any link as for the injectors I bought a junked car with less than 12000km's on the injectors I'm going to adjust the opening pressure some and try it.

Don;t suppose you have a boost gauge to see what kinda boost it puts out in it;s stock configuration?
KAC
November 22nd, 2003, 08:09 AM
No boost gauge yet, stock boost is 11psi before the waste gate opens.

Hey KAC, since we are running these diesels at higher rpms than in the car, do you think the turbo is knocking down the efficiency much? Just thinking if its putting too much boost in and is actually making the engine work harder than it needs to, ...would it be worth playing with the blow-off valve or waste gate so you're not putting boost in when there's is no need? Just a thought.

1984 Toyota 2L diesel in my 1987 lonw wheelbase samurai.
All Toyota running gear too.
The engine needs a turbo and will get one soon. I'm runing 38.5" SX's so she needs a little more power for highway use. Up to 50mph she's fine.

hey KAC are you running axels (4.11) from a 4 cyc ****?? i plan on running the 1.6td with the stock axels i have maybe with 31" tires for some offroad fun.
i dont see why they charge $800 for these kits, machine down a fox flywheel and get a oil filter adaptor from a diesel north south motor,(which is half the battle)
As for the adaptor where am i able to get one, it would save me lots of time fabracating my own.
how far off are the gears from each other??

I'm running sj410 stuff right now, soon to be toy axels.SJKrawler might be able to help you out with an adapter plate. the oil fiter housing off of the fox will work also. I made a remote setup for mine. I also built my own adapter.

Acme has a kit that allows you to bolt up any VW 4 cylinder diesel/gas motor to your suzuki transmission, sidekick or tracker transmission (auto or manual) or a Toyota truck transmission (auto or manual).
Acme sells a bare bones to 100 percent complete kits for the Samurai, Sidekick and Geo tracker. Unlimited free tech support.
I've used 6 of his kits so far using 1.9TD's and 1.6 NA's and 1.6TD's.

Hey SJKrawler,
Have any of those blank adapter plates left? What did you use for a flywheel, engine mounts, etc? I have a 1.6 NA diesel engine sitting in my garage, but the full kits are a bit spendy for me.

SJKrawler is using a redrilled sammy flywheel and stock sammy stater.not sure what he's using fer mounts.I 'm using a machined Fox flywheel and a 1.9 hp Izusu starter. I built my own adapter..this is an old thread...got over a year of running on her now...I love it! Ask Chris (SANDS) about how mine werks....or Depot he's Seen it in action. If I can help ask away...I'm not too far away

Well I could go either route... hard to imagine a sammy starter turning over a VW diesel, but if it works it works, right? I don't have welding/machining skills or tools, so I need to get my mitts on a flywheel, adapter & mounts. I see they're selling them here:
http://www.roadlessgear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?&store_code=rgl&screen=PROD&product_code=rg289
Motor mounts are an extra $50. Seems reasonable to me. But if SJKrawler (or you) have something on hand I'd just as soon support local folks.
This is a second vehicle, so I don't mind the idea of using a sammy starter.. as long as it works.
BTW... anymore Fox flywheels kicking around? Need one for another project.

Acme specializes in the diesel conversion for Samurai's, Sidekick's and Tracker's. Even Toyota (22R tranny style) pick-ups.

Roadless gear kit requires welding on the VW block with copper forms. You also need to plug stud holes and then drill out and tap some holes. You'll need to ask for a second pilot bushing so you have a spare when the brass wears out. Adapter plate is 1/8 inch thick. You need to know how to weld up your own stuff to use this kit. It works fine though you can't send anything back if it breaks like the other kits.

The Acme kit allows you to use a gear reduction tracker/sidekick starter. Forget the Samurai starter. Its not strong enough. The Kick/Tracker is rated the same power as the vW starter.

Just finished a Sidekick diesel conversion with a 1.6TD. Rig has the 3/3 Calmini lift. Has 513 gears running 33's. Feels like a 1.6 TD Samurai regarding power (actually a little less powerful) but rides more like a car. This will be more comfortable for long hiway trips as opposed to the Sammy, eh. Anyone running a tracker?

Actually vwzzuk, there's alot of people here runnin Track/Kicks. Some serious ones at that. Uh, you just kinda popped in here and spewed a bunch of stuff and no one has a clue as to who you are, what you drive or where you're from for that matter. You may wanna make a 'pit stop' HERE (http://www.zookpower.ca/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1) and fill us in a bit.

yea... I'll be doing the vw swap this winter... not the diesel, but close enough...the 16V 1.8L :D
wouldn't mind having more input on this project.... go say HI and let's talk :D :D :D

I just finished installing a VW 1.9TD into my LWB. This is a very easy swap, easier than the 16V I did on my last Samurai. I used the Acme kit that comes with everything you need. If you use the Samurai transmission and stock R&P's and transfer case, you will need 33" tires to make it geared correctly.
I highly recommend this swap!

For anyine interested in buying a VW 1.9 TD, there is a complete 1995 Passat turbo diesel for sale @ $2500. I'm sure you can buy it for $2000.
I'll give you money for the rest of the car sans engine as long as you hold onto it until March. Any takers, let me know. One small problem... the car's (http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=324876&adid=4621455) in Peterborough.
