The recent closure of Paragon Park, while not even in our country, still struck hard at the Ontario 4x4 community. Granted it had some extraordinary circumstances that may not have been preventable but the truth of the matter is that most closures, the ones we face in Ontario, are preventable.
While Northern Ontario has not been affected much, if at all, by the closures occurring in Southern Ontario, we still have a moral responsibility to address the problem before it does start to impact the north. The closures are causing the remaining trails to be overused and the inevitable result is that they will be closed as well. It may take some time for the ripple effect to reach the north but rest assured it will happen if gone unchallenged.
Apart from trail access, the greatest hurdle we face is the legal aspect of driving our modified trucks to the trail, on the trail and back again. Do we all report our modifications to our insurance companies? Do you enjoy inflated premiums or being dropped entirely for having a small lift and bigger tires? Are you satisfied that the money you spent on said lift kit and expensive tires would not be reimbursed should you be involved in a collision because you didn't tell your insurance company about them? Worse yet, do you realize that your unreported modifications may completely void your insurance altogether?
The OMVOC lobbies not the law enforcers (MNR, police) but rather the law makers. (Queen's Park) It is one thing to play by the rules and even bend them here and there, but quite another to make new rules that are fair and reasonable so that we can all enjoy our sport legally and without worry.
Check the link at the top. I have created a new forum specifically for the OMVOC on our local board that explains what the organization is about and what they are trying to accomplish. I urge you to PM Jeff with any questions you may have in regards to this organization and how it works to help us by attacking at the root of the problems we face. The OMVOC needs your support to be able to make changes. Your membership is one more voice that will be heard and your membership fee goes directly to the cause.
Have a look, ask questions if you have any and most importantly, come join the fight.
