Well in order to get things sorted out so that it's easier for the wife, We towed the tintop down to the garage and brought the softop to the house (ready for a buddy to take it away)

No problems going to the garage and parking the tintop. Get the softop hooked up to a tow strap and start bringing it home on a residental road get about 50 metres from the garage and less then a mile from the house and an MP pulls me over. He wouldn't let me tow it any further. Had to unhook it turn it around and push it back to the garage.

Talk about bad timing

Is it legal for short distants and to tow a disabled vehicle?. I know that for long distances and the ideal way is to use a tow bar.

FDWS.

Fresh Donut Withdrawal Syndrome.

Always stop at Tim Hortons first before you do something like that! :thefinger

im definatly not the one to spout of exactly how the rules are stated, but i do believe you have to have both a primary and secondary tow strap, working hazards and an "in tow" sign during daylight hours only for them to not bug ya.

I did some digging and came up with this.

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/section5e.htm

I think I'll go down to the MP's tomorrow and verify it. He was fairly nice about it and best to check before I do it again.

The catch is "being able to stop the disable vehicle". If ur using a tow bar - no worries, both vehicle will stop together. if using a strap the disabled vehicle must be able to stop on its own.

Most vehicles today have either vaccum boosters or power steering boosters to help with brakes. This means ur engine needs to be running to assist with braking. If it aint running, u cant use a strap. using the handbrake or just trying to force the brake pedal down does not qualify.

Obviously, u need a second prson to steer/brake the disabled vehicle and u'll need hazard/warning lites.

From the sounds of it, the cop was pretty decent by making u push it back and no fines. Id let it go and next time do it rite.

from what I understand, both vehicles must be plated, insured . now hook your strap and tow away. I towed an extended cab pick-up 6 dirt bikes , 6 people with a rental van from bowmanville to Toronto. The cops pulled up and looked , no problem. :yike :yike :thefinger

I am sure it depends on the cops and how much of a dick they r at the time but you can't tow as the MTO link says. now I have done it and the cops did not bother me either but if they want to they will charge you. The bitch of it is they charge u with reckless and u lose point too! I know this as when I had my shop a customer was charged and he lossed points for it.

The vehicle is plated, registered, saftied and insured. My wife was in the tow vehicle and I was in the towed vehicle, with good brake pressure. The only reason I had to tow the vehicle is cause it has no gas tank.

I agree this is NOT the ideal way to do it and wouldn't drive km's to do it. but in an emergency I believe it is allowed. These are military police as well so it might be differant (doubt it). But there is no harm in asking and then I'll know for sure.

(I won't be doing this again for at least 6 months anyways;)

I know in my zuk after the engine is off, i get 2 or 3 good pumps of the brake b4 there is no boost and it comes down to shear pushing the pedal powr which aint that easy.

My dually is power steering assisted brake booster.. when the motor shuts down, my pedal goes rite to the floor b4 it even starts to engage - pretty much useless..

at the end of the day, the way the mto website words it, its open to much interpretation and from past experiece, interpretation means whatever the cop feels like

From past experiences, I found it doent hurt to ask the copper sincere questions about stuff as long as u come off as asking sincerely and not trying to prove ur rite and hes wrong. Ive learned a lot that way but u basically gotta bow ur head in sham and be submissive when asking specially if he can turn around and screw yah for something.

I just read through this quickly, so I don't know if it was mentioned at all, but JFYI...

Both vehicles plated, stickered and insured.
Both vehicles occupied.
You need TWO (2) tow straps or two chains or 1 strap and 1 chain. The idea is to have safety redundancy.

the biggest problem was you were towing at cfb petawawa and the base commander set extra rules on base and i do beleve that the rules on base are not to be towed with chains or straps u must use a proper tow dolly ive also had my run in on base there with those meat heads thank god im gone soon
