My buddy found a sj410 at local wreckers, if its a 1984 i want to rip the Tcase, how do i know if its the stock factory case, and the ideal one for low gearing on my samurai?

Basically, what am i lookin for, if its the Tcase i want, what tools do i need to take it apart?

Well first of all... we get to push it off the LJ it's parked on top of, in that event we should be able to roll it onto it's lid, it was a tin top but had a flint stone conversion roof as well so it's not like it really matters. We are bringing the torch mafuka, TONIGHT

And it'll be the factory case because the thing was bone stock, just a matter of what year it is...

To spice things up, what would happen if we ran an LJ case? The one tin top LJ still had the case in it...

forgot to mention the last time the SJ was registered was 85' according to the plate and sticker that are on it (in surprisingly good shape for a plate too) so we could be in luck :thefinger

You would have centered front and rear outputs, and you would have over 3:1 low range (I forget exactly). I've known a few people who have replaced the jack shaft in a Samurai with an LJ case, it gives around 8:1 in low/low. Bigzook69's Sami had that setup when he bought it.

sorry for hi-jack..jack, but that set up was weak and prone to breakage...thus i cut it all out and started fresh:D that little lj case was good for nothing bigger than a go cart..

What was the weak link? 3x power into the stock sami case? or was it the LJ case that was the problem? Or was just a poor execution of a cool idea?

DAMNIT!~ i thought that might be a simple solution to gearing! ah well

Hey guys, what's the big deal with the '84 t-cases? I know they are 12% lower, but my '84 has the stock case in it and it's not nearly low enough in low range for 29" tires. I want to go with bigger tires, but fear that it just won't go off-road. My plan was to swap in a re-geared sammy t-case, but do I need to? Can I get lower gears/bigger split out of the t-case I have? Thanks again guys!

Canadian_Zuk let me pick up a disassembled LJ case from him about 2 years ago cause I had the same idea... Inline before the t-case for mad low gears, and 1:1 high range for normal street driving. Basically the plan was to use it as a Klune Underdrive case.

The downside to this: The stock sammi t-case would not be able to handle the torque. With anything less than a Kong it would rip the aluminum apart.

I couldn't image it would be all that reliable on-road either. As i use my truck daily at highway speeds, i couldn't sacrifice it's reliability for low range gearing.

Not sure if its kosher to let the cat out of the bag here...The 84 t-case has the gearing you need to make a rock lobster 4:1 t-case. your current t-case main gear can be cut in half and welded to another main gear to create a 4:1 out of your exisiting case. Buying re-gears for an 84 would be a waste of $ unless you can't find someone with the skills to cut and weld your existing set up, in which case sell that entire t-case to someone else and purchase some new gears from Trail Tough.

Better yet, just send me your 84 t-case with a case of beer and I'll get rid of that junk for you ;)

Thanks man! I don't see the cutting and welding being a problem, seems like the hard part is finding cases for parts!
