Hey guys,
This might be a stupid and impossible idea, but
I am sick of having to beef up ONE leg while driving my little beauty.

Any idea how to fit one of those vacuum brake boosters to a SJ410?
Safety is #1

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply,

Firstly is it safe, and secondly is it expensive :)

Im guessing there is lots of information out there about it,
thanks for your help.

Edit: Also i have drums all round, Is it okay to have just the rear as disc and front as drums
Or would i have to do the whole lot (tight bugdet)

I tried to fit a sammy master and booster, it hits the steering shaft. SO i tried a sidekick one, samething.
Does anyone know of a booster that will fit?

I dont know if it will fit but I know the booster from a firefly are tiny and might work. Might is the key, there is not much room.

Don't put disk on rear without disk on front, front is way more important.

fronts are pretty easy to do as well

Sorry haven't replied in a while my car caught on fire when out wheeling,

What is the average cost for a conversion like that and are parts available in aus.

Thx

e-bay has acouple of kits, I build my own kit using brackets from another front diff and sidekick calipers, i'll try and get some pics.

Ive seen somewhere that this can be done easily with OEM parts, but i cant find it now. My zook is an 83 sj410 and the next year up (84) had disks on the front.

Think it might be an easy swap?

Hey this is really an easy swap, the axles are the same and so are the housings. If you want super easy just hit the for sale section and get a pair of SJ axles (disk front) and swap it in....they are available pretty cheap. You can upgrade if your a little more handy to the sammy axle..cheap as well

First of all thanks for all your help this site will definitely be getting a donation from me. :D

Secondly it would be a dream if i could buy stuff from here but unfortunately Im in Australia (postage would be killer).

I have found some sj413 Axles + diff etc for $770 AUD which is a bit out of my price range at the moment, would the brake assembly just bolt on, aka caliper mount and disk, i havent been able to see how the disk brakes are set up on them as i rarely see a junked sammy.

Once again thanks for your help. And patience :thefinger

HAHAHA didn't even see your location...would be a wee bit expensive to ship them down.

Ok, lets hit this from a different side then.

For your rear disk conversion take a look here
http://www.bc4x4.com/tech/2000/zukdiscs/zukdiscs.cfm

This works on Sammies and SJ's, I used it on my SJ way back in the day. just make sure you look at the axle as you make the swap, there are a few small differences

The fronts are a wee bit different, I believe you'll need to find the outer knuckles, caliper mounts and calipers for the axles you have and swap them out. If I remember correctly there is no holes to bolt the caliper mount on a disk brake style knuckle.....take some pics and post them up, maybe I can see a better way to do it.

See the red circles (cleverly edited in:roll:), I think this is where i would bolt the caliper mount, it is on the front of the swivel hub (front knuckle i believe its called), and its where the original drum backing plate is bolted on. Ive tracked a pair of mounts down from the 84 model for $25 AUD a side which i can afford. ( I was quoted $110 a side from the wreckers!)

I think i will head down today and pick them up, its worth a go at $50, i dont have much to loose. If the caliper mounts fit then thats one step closer, if not, just more time my beast(hardly) is off the off road so to speak.

Tell me if you need more pics

Thanks

And viola!

Got the two caliper mounts 20 bucks each and measured up the holes and guess what :D THEY FIT.

Installation begins tomorrow, hoping I wont run into any problems.

By the way how do i strip it right down to remove the old plates and get the new mounts on, and do i need a backing plate or anything behind the disks?

The mounts mounted.

But now i cant get the hub in the right spot, the axle (i think its called) the one that comes out of the swivel hub, is not long enough to put the circlip back on! GRR.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/Luke228_photos/100_0736.jpg

Can that axle bit (please tell me what its called) be replaced by a bigger one from a later model say the one with the disks. Or am i screwed

Thanks

Edit to last post:

I just had an idea. See the lip on the caliper bracket

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/Luke228_photos/100_0740.jpg

That is making it that little bit too thick so the shaft isnt long enough.
Reckon if i got that lip machined out would be the ticket?

Thanks again

Take one of your hub bolts and thread it into end of the axle shaft, pull on the bolt and the circlip should go on. There should be some movement in the shaft.

Woo thanks!
Now do i need to get the master cylinder from the model with the disks or will the original be okay.

You guys rock:thefinger

Sorry been on vacation.

Looks like everything is going according to plan. If your going disk front drum rear your master you have now will work perfectly. If you want to do 4 wheel disks it will still work however you will need a brake bias control plumbed into the sytem somewhere...I ran without it but it was trail only and was diabolical to stop if you were going fast.

Got it all done and working, after a lot of trouble finding the right size bolts and stuff :D .

Just gotta do all the adjustments to the rear drums now.

Hooray I can go wheeling again!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for everyones help.
