Yes its a dirty dirty word in the Sammy world especially in Canada but I figured we should talk about it and get all the tips and tricks out in the open.

Currently I am restoring (back to stock...almost) an 85 pick up that I found through a board member here (you the man) and it is one rusty bitch that needs some serious TLC.

Now the serious deep wet rust that just flakes away needs to be cut out and replaced with fresh new solid steel, that we know. My question revolves arounf the smaller "buttons" or surface rust that just scuffs off.

Rust is a chemical reaction and to stop that reaction you need to take a piece of the chemical soup away. Krown uses a heavy protectant that seals the metal from oxygen and it works well for new cars and freash metal but I am unsure about how it works over pieces with rust on it already.

So what I am looking for is a paint, oil, etc that I can use to piant over exsisting rust to stop it from spreading...anyone? ya ya, grind it off blah blah...but what if you can't?? because of location??

So post up your experiences and what you use....

Mudslug, for you, I have a sand blaster waiting... Otherwise, I know someone who does it with a travelling truck... we could find a secluded place and have him blast it there so there is no mess.

Ya I know we talked about it but you cannot sand blast where I want to fix. There are 2 or 3 spots where rust has gone through the frame (nothing too bad) and I have ground down, cut out and made a weld in plate to replace the affected area but I am worried about the frame continuing to rust so I want to coat the inside of the frame with something to seal it. Once I have the inside done I will move to the outside.

Overkill?? maybe but I like to do things right....

Also the floors have small little surface rust bits but are in fantastic shape otherwise so I don't want to sandblast but I do want to stop it from spreading.

Trust me, the bed will need blasted for sure, it needs some serious help....on that note can anyone get 4x8 diamond plate real cheap??

oh man you got the blue pickup. I can;t wait to see it done.
i wanted that thing so bad, I dunno why but i love the way it looks.
As for your rust, there is a product that you paint on and will stop rust from spreading. The name escapes me, arhhhh it works great, let me go search :D

what about looking at the spray on rust stop,or rust removerers from can tire? Or fill the frame with spray in foam:D

Mudslug

Foam?! No that would hold the water next to the steel...bad.

I am going to swing by CT on the way home to look around and then hit Home Depot and see what they have....other than that I don't know.

You may be shit outta luck expect for like you said. removing one of the ingrediants that makes rust will prevent it. The only solution that is feesable would be to take away the oxygen. you cannot remove or protect the steel and it would be impossible to get rid of moisture or water so prolonging it with some sort of thick oil or lube will have to do.
One way would be to bring it to a rustproofer. dealers have this stuff that sticks and looks like a white grease and will not drip or harden over time. the good thing about that stuff is that you cannot even spray it off with high pressure after it cures.
The cheap solution is two or three times a year is to load up on the white grease in there with the little red straw thingy.
Pay to have it all sandblasted and then either painted or even dipped in galvinizing and painted.
I could dig up a number of a contact that has Vats big enough to do frame galvinizing.
Good louck.

I have gotten my hands on one of those small lighted mirrors from a buddy, i am going to look in the frame tonight to see how bad it is (or isn't)

The thing just sat to long and was just rusting quietly, I will fix it and save another zook from the ravages of rust.

Funny thing, the passenger side floor is absolutely showroom but the drivers side floor is....um...ur.....missing.

I think I found what I am looking for in my Acklands Grainer book, my research continues.

there is an etching agent or something .... it stops the rust .... a friend uses it when he paints ... i will ask him what it is

por-15
I think thats the name .
This paint chemicaly changes the rust to a harder substance and seals it from further rust .
They have multiple products for different rust conditions.
Look at J e e p kings and search for it .
The J e e p s rust out like Sammys just in different places .
Trust me I know ...lol
About 100 guys on there recomend this stuff and say the only bad thing is getting it on your skin.

por 15 is good, but what you need is OSFO, only avail in the states from what i know, it instantly stops the rust and prevents from any further rusting---also, its a primer, can paint and fill rite over it. i did it on a truck years ago and everywhere else rusted cept fer the spots i treated.

sand blaster waiting not a chance dude!! dunno bout you but the only thing on a zuk i'd sandblast is the frame, the second u hit the body you'll get super warpage and waves, its just too *k'n thin folks!!! even media blasting does it.

These of course are just my opinions based on my personal experience, i will not be held accountable for above formentioned thoughts  :bo:

por 15 works wonders on rusty shit, i used it on my zuk, bumpers etc, works great, must be kinda clean though, i used it on my floors and wheel wells, weren't really clean , but i stuck like glue, it is a non poreus paint, so it seals well. you can pick it up at Marks bug barn, located in Hamilton, it is about 50 bucks a pint , not cheap, but you can hit the stuff with a hammer and it won't chip.
you can spray it too, but kiss the spray gun good bye, use lots of cheap brushes, and good rubber gloves because only time will get the shit off!!!!!

Ummm... you could also always sandblast with Baking soda... I hear that that gets rid of all the rust, but does not put too much pressure on the thin steel... Never tried it though...

Mudslug

I am only blasting the bed, the steel there is way thick enough to handle the pressure of a sand blaster.

The frame got the big inspection last night and I chipped away all the bad stff and low and behold there was good steel under that there rust!!

I have a few issues with the bed supports to go over but some box steel and some C channel and I will be good to go!!

por15, I think I know where I can buy this closer to me...

You should see her now, the rear section is finally all apart and it looked like 2 sticks poking out of the back of the cab.

Well I hit the frame with the knotted wire wheel cup last night and brought her right down to fresh steel all around and got rid of the nasty rust scale. After I was done the only issues I have are with the uprights that hold the bed in place so I will be knocking two of them off and building new ones this weekend. I primed the frame with 3 cans of zinc chromate, then etch primer (shhh I know I know) and then i hit it with the flat black Tremclad rust paint. Tonight she will be getting the rubberized undercoating and then another coat of black Tremclad.

Ya ya it may be considered overkill but i am only doing this once!!

Also if I have the time I will be stripping the rear and whoring it up as well and making it all pretty.

have you thought about using the bedliners? I used Gator bedliner on the floors of my truck when i first got it (Only $20 from crappy tire, open box on sale). That stuff seels great, and will never scratch off or flake off like paint will

Mudslug
January 7th, 2004, 11:39 AM
That stuff is good for beds and floors but there is no give to it at all. The rubberized stuff will absorb the contant sandblasting that occurs during everyday use from just driving down the road.

I will be using it in the cab for but the frame and underside of the wee beastie is another issue.

zc911
January 7th, 2004, 12:03 PM
i would do the underside of the cab and bed with it
