I am looking for some affordable ways to get more power out of my carbed sami 1.3,not trying to break any speed records i would just like to be able to get out of the way on the highway,i was thinking of installing header and new exhaust since i need exhaust anyway what do you guys think?

Motors are basically a big air pump, the faster you can get the air in and then out the more power you have.

This is what I would do.

Find another 1.3 head, shave it 2 atmospheric points.
Port the ever living snot out of it
Get proper 3 angle valve job
header
port the intake
Advance the timing a wee bit
Run it lean with cold plugs.

Mmmmm you would have a fire breathing monster....

Best thing is while you are aquiring all the parts you can still drive it. Once you have the parts its a weekend swap to install..

Zoooom!!

I had a ported head on my other truck, milled 20 thou, with a header and a 4 runner exhaust. No 3 angle valve job (would have been nice) and a mild port. Went like stink. This is all good stuff and you'll notice the difference......... provided you have a healthy engine to begin with.

There is no better sound than a zook turning 9000rpm through a free flow exhaust....just like a big empty coffee can full of very angry bee's!!

whats the stroke and rod length, and bore on a 1.3 VS a 1.6?
Is the 1.6 bored or stoked?
If the blocks are the same, has anyone tired a 1.6 crank and rods in a 1.3 block ?

Longer stroke means more torque but you can (I said can) loose RPM and crank stability.

If you want to go to town do this
Block:
Drill out all oil passages
Line bore
Bore 3 over (or go more but you should magnaflux for small cracks)
drill for 4 bolt mains

Crank:
Knife edge counter throws
balance

Rods:
Lightest strongst rods you can find, weigh all to make sure they are the same weight. Drill down to the lowest weight if needed.

Pistons:
Flat tops with reliefs for the valves (you will see why)

Head:
Port, polish 3 angle valve job
Take it down 5 thou (the room needed is in the piston relief)

Cam:
Custom ground for HP or TRQ your call.

Nice heavy flywheel and a bunch of other things......

So it will have gobs of power but it will only run c12 race gas and for this kind of money you could swap in a toyo aluminium v6.

Samurai specs :

Bore x Stroke 2.91 in. x 3.03 in.
Displacement 1.3 L
Compression ratio 8.9:1

Track/kick specs :

Bore x Stroke 2.95 in. x 3.54 in.
Displacement 1.6 L
Compression ratio 8.9:1

Noticeable difference in deck height, just look at timing covers.

Blah blah blah just swap it all to a 1.6 16 valve or the very least the 8 valve. By the time you go through all that money an effort you'll be no further ahead than the 16 valve, and it will be cheaper.
Then if that's still not enough mod the 16 valve to get more Hp.

Now that 02 cents was worth three!!!:D

man that would be some serious turd polishing Mudslug haha.
Forogt to add custom adj. cam gears to correct the timing from the shaved head

I have the Calmini tri-y header and 2" exhaust combo with a Calmini hi-flo air filter...you will get a noticeable jump in HP and it won't break the bank. This is a very good quality exhaust, I've had a few mechanics comment about that, and it always drops their jaws when I tell them how much it was (under $500 CDN).

Even the 1.6 bottom end makes a huge difference off road. I can grab second gear in a mudhole with 33 boggers. Thats with a 1.3 head and carb. The 1.6 16v is nice but IMHO not that necessary off road, although it is nice. 1.6 8v's are way cheaper now adays and more plentiful.

1.6 TD is the way to go but I'm a bit biased

Which make and models came with 1.6 8v's?I have a good many salvage yards near me,but I don't know what to look for.

I think 93 kicks were the first year to come out with 1.6 16 valves but apparently they had an issue with overheating... so i guess ur looking for 92 or older for an 8 valve jobbie.

but if u want my unsolicited opinion, 1.6 16 valve with the puter and all the associated electronics is the shiat. I;'ve launched my truck 15 feet in the air and slammed into a snowy ditch upsidedown (ok, maybe I was dwinking a bit on that one) and the damn engine neve quit! the power to weight ratio is da shiat. shes a tough engine that will scream all day and I got video to prove it.

if u want more power, this is truly the ticket.. mechanically a simple conversion, electroncially its a bit of work bu still, no thtat bad, the benifits will blo u away. if u dont believe me, ask lil-beast for his opinion.

I was looking for more power for my 1.6 8 valve that I haven't even driven yet. I'm still working on it, you can run a nos kit with a 25 lb bottle for $900.00 cnd. Installed yourself. It adds 25 to 75 more horse, the choice is yours. I don't know if the little 1.3 will hold it. If someone is willing to try and pops the motor, I will gladly donate a used motor, if need be. If You want power , Thats power.:upy: :upy: :fa:

The 1.3 would take the nos better than the 1.6 due to the short stroke.

Good day!
Muddslugs advice on power is bang on. I did all of the work he recommends to my 88' sammi 1.3 last year when I rebuilt it.I also installed a custom ground high torque cam from Shadbolt cams in vancouver($180.) I have stock gearing and can pull my boat trailer(850 lbs) at 100k on the hilly BC highways no sweat! The best price I found on decent headers was at Lordco auto parts;HEDMANS for under $200 in stock. They bolted on easy with no leaks after 6 months and come fitted with factory intake heat riser and emmision fittings if you want to use them. I am still using the stock carb which I will change in spring for another decent boost of juice. I just jjoined this forum and your posting is old, but I hope this info helps.
GOOD LUCK!
