What are the RULES for towing double. I want to tow my camper trailer and my zuk to NS this summer. Trailer has elec. brakes, 22ft long, 3200lbs. Prob. use a dolly for the zuk with surg breaks. Trucks is a quad cab ram 1500, Hemi, 8500lb tow cap. Has the tow package. Not to worried about truck just wanted to know what the legal limits are.
Thanks
Tony

from tip to tip ur length limit is 75 feet in ontario... different rules for diff provinces. doesnt matter 1 trailer or 17.

the big thing they look at is sway. there is a small limit on how much ur trailer can sway while driving down a straight road. dont quote me but i think it was... drive 100 m down a straight road, the end of ur last trailer can not sway more than 3 cm to either side.

u gotta watch ur weights though... the truck fer sure will require a yellow sticker and be registered high enough to cover the weight of the truck, the camper and prolly the zuk.

here is the man to talk to... extremely knowledgable and friendly..

they do have an 800 # but i dont have it...

gl and report back what u learn.

Unless your camper is a fifth wheel you cannot tow anything behind it. And you cannot tow anything behind a fifth in BC.
Source; CAA manitoba.
Remember your 8500# is with NOTHING in the truck but the driver. Your passengers and the cargo come off of that 8500. so the weight of your trailer LOADED and zuk on dolly plus passengers and all of your gear has to be less than 8500#
Lots of good info about this topic on RV.net open roads forum

Thanks for the info Depot, I called bill and
Ontario amd Quebec allows up to 3 units including your truck and rules a re different for an SUV but i didnt ask what they were.
NB and NS ollow only 2 units unless one is a 5th wheel.:(
I wonder what would happen if i got caught in NB or NS.

I cannot say for sure as it has not happened to me, but when you move from Province to Province, you are responsible for knowing the laws. Ignorance of the law is not a defence.

You can not tow in tandem unless you have black plates and your registered for the amount towing combined.

many provinces will respect the rules of ur originating province but that is not a guarantee specially when it comes to significant things like b-trains etc.

In ontario and quebec it is legal for any properly equiped truck to tow tandom under weight and length guidelines. Info was direct from DOT . NS and NB its is ok if second trealer is a 5th wheel.

Thanks depot, maybe i will forgo the tandom tow and take my ATVs down east. I can put a extention on the rear of my trailer and not worry about a fine. But its nice to know it can be done in some provs.

Guess it depends what your intention is whith it. I can remove my seats from my Suburban and have it registered as a commercial vehicle the I can get black plates. The tow in tandem. This again is from you know who. If your intention is not for towing or commercial I guess you would get blue. Not sure what the procedure is or how they determine black or blue.

I was told my truck comes with black only could have been miss-informed, dealed knew it was my DD and not for work. I guess the main thing is we get all this in the open for the next guy or gal, saves a bit of time.:D

All Full Size pickups no matter the intended use are plated with Black, I think the only way around that is Vanity plates. The difference in the black plates is the stick that can be added to it for weight.

Every pickup truck I've owned, full size or mini, has had black plates, and none were used for work. Like LS said, the only way around black plates for a truck that I know if is a personalized plate.

Probable because there so many crappy little SUVs out there and you would get someone towing there popup and boat with a CRV. Easyer to say no SUVs even though there a few that are more than capable. Buut as i said i have been wronge before:)

Any vehicle designed to carry cargo - ie pick up trucks, cube vans transports etc should have black plates. mind u.. many a moron werk at MTO licensing office (which is farmed out from MTO) and they misplate vehicles many times.

A GMC Safari can have either black or blue plates... depends on whether the cargo area is empty or full of seats. Once it has seats back there... blue plates.

MTO enforcement and OPP dont give a flying fruck bout what plates u actually have... if u r plated wrong cause bimbete at the mto office doesnt know nutin.. thats ur problem and u'll be stuck wth mega fines when u get popped.

Mel's 4dr Kick has black plates. I asked about it when they gave them to me and they said it was already like that in the system.
