I picked up the axle with the e-locker from a 90 whatever 4 runner today. Decided to pull it while i was at work. Did it right in the van in the underground parking garage downtown Toronto.
I beat the living snot out of one of the seized drums with no avail. Then i looked close and saw two threaded holes. Ahah i know what they are for and robbed a couple of bolts from the sway bar mounting and threaded them in. I was so pissed when i found out that they were too short and would not separate the drum from the rusted on brake shoes. Ok i got that done both sides after a bit of fighting and prying. ( damn ears are still ringing from the echo underground)
Then i disconect the brake lines and undo the 4 bolts that hold in the axle. Well toyota decided to put the shock mounts so close to the backing plate that you could not get the rachet in there, hmmm try 3/8 drive. Oh shit i lost my 12mm socket . (remember all my tools are else where except for my socket set) so i get the 1/4 drive out and snap the bloody tip ( the nipple piece that goes into the soket clean off. Anyway i managed to get it all taken care of and out comes the axles. Next i figured was a bunch of nuts and out comes the third. Boy was i wrong.
Good thing cause i get paid by the hour. All bolts came out no problem and i figured a few taps with the hammer and it should pop like any other third member in the world. Wrong again. apparently toyota decided to hide two long studs through the solenoid that actuates the locker.
I figure all is good and get one stud out (the nut was rusted) and get the nut off the other ( which at the time thought it was just there to hold down the protective cover. Nope, that stud was so siezed in there it was not funny. I banged and swore and banged some more. Ok we have a 1/4 inch between the housing and the third member, Just another 1/4 to go. Then it happened. I swung the hammer and missed the prybar, Bam! right on to the hand. Thats when i got serious and pulled the grinder out with the cutoff disc and said good bye to it. ( toyota sells new studs right?)
Ok now my van is full of rust and gear oil, as well as the parking garage (good thing security likes me) and all this for what??? the love of wheeling. At least i got paid good money this time.
At any rate it was a 4.30 ratio (10 pinion and 43 on the crown gear). Good thing cause i think i have another 4.30 (4.37 whatever) in another housing waiting to be installed in the front, I was hoping that it was not the 4.88 that came in the v-6 runner with the 31" tires and the tow package, cause they are hard to find.
Well it is a lesson learned and i thought that you guys would have a good chuckle at that.
Sorry everyone if there are some typo's but my hand really hurts .
