So the ole tracker 8 valve engine is mint. I am thinkin of pickin up buddies 4 dr 1.6 16 valve sidekick. What Id like to do is swap out the 16 valve and replace it with my 8 valve. I couldnt give a shit about the daily driver, Id rather have the 16 valve in my LWB. The 8valve is healthy enough to push the 4dr sidekick. The 8 valve 2 dr kick I have will be cut up this spring cuz the body's fawked. Geuss I have to change harnesses or what ? I dont know shiat about electrical..... thats Depots department. What do I gotta do to make this happen ?

Unless u wanna spend the $$ on modifying ur wiring harnesses like from painless wiring.. I'd suggest when u replace the engine, replace the wiring harness with it.. complete, both interior and exterior harness.. this means pulling ur dash off and carefully taking it apart. Swap out everything from the main power cables, the engine fuse compartment (16 valve) and the interior fuse block.
If u go this route, i think its the easiest... plug and play for 90% of the stuff. Ignition and heater and stereo and wiper/heaadlights/turn switch will be the hardest to mix and match but its still pretty simple, i can walk u through most of that on msn.
u can also run 2 wiring harnesses... keep the original zuk harness for lights, horn, turn, heat stereo etc.. all u gotta do is keep the fat white wire with a yellow stripe that runs to ur battery powered on. then add the second harness to take care of the engine and electronics. This way is prolly real easy for yah but it starts to get crowded with this set-up. Keep in mind, for the 16 valve, u must have both interior and exterior wiring harnesses since the interior one conains all the relays.
To stick the 8 valve in the kick, do a full harness swap. Most of the stuff will plug right in to things like ignition and exterior lights.
This really isnt all that hard to do. tell u what.. u get the mechanics all in, lay the hanesses in and I'll come up there one weekend and for the right amount of spiced rum, I'll hook it all in for yah
oh yah, one more tiny thing, when u goto put the 16 valve harness in ur zuk, do NOT use the stock holes where the old harness went through the firewall.. take a look at the kick and note where their holes are.. try to match those when u make new ones, otherwise the harness is short and a real pain to work with.
gimme a shout when ur closer to being ready and we'll set somethign up.

oh ayh, one more thing... keep the Instrument cluster with the 16 valve. its much easier to swap the entire cluster out (duct tape and glue guns works great) then it is to trace all the indicator lights and guages and get them to work proper. It is doable without swapping clusters, but will take much more time cutting and splicing wires.. i prefer to just plug in the IC.

ok so....... doesnt seem too bad. Let's get things a lil simpler now.
8v into 4dr kick, put the 8v cluster in the kick, correct ? Only problem is then lengthening the harness for the rear tail lights, Im assuming. Is this correct ?
Im really wanting the 4dr kick to be good to go with the 8v cuz it's gonna be a daily (for now hehehe)
The fun (and spiced rum) really comes into play when we put the 16v into the LWB. At least we wont have to lengthen the harness.
Forget about the 2dr tracker, when all this happens the tracker turns into a parts vehicle.
Liquor stor is right around the corner, when you come up gimme a weeks notice and I'll make sure theyre stocked up on spiced rum and vodka coolers

leave the rear harnesses in! I've been mulling this over for the last hour... its much easier to cut and splice old rears to new engine/interior harnesses. (better make that 2 bottles of spiced rum :) )
reason : sammy rear harness runs throught the firewall, down the tranny tunnel, picks up the switch for 5th gear and reverse off ur taranny, 4wd switch off t-case, fuel level sensor and rear lights. Up in the firewall, its real easy to cut and splice into new harness. this is mondo easier than running a new harness not to mention all the plugs on the rear lights are different between sammy and kick not to mention kick has a few more wires.
LWB : u can use the existing harness for all the above mentioned stuff, u will have to run one new wire from interior fuse block to fuel pump in tank. I asume ur swapping tanks too. otherwise an inline pump near the tank is simple too and u need to run that same wire.
dome lights and seat belt warning lights wiring both come out near the fuse block so leave existing portions and unplug them there. on the kick, the rear harness dome lights, seatbelt, door ajar are all one harness that runs down the drivers rocker panel, and squirels its way to the tank and rear from there
the 16 v has a short harness that comes off the passanger side of the engine and goes to tranny/t-case. I never did hook mine up and she runs fine. For ur application, I would cut this piece in half.. keep the tranny/tcase portion with the kick tranny so we can mate the wiring harnesses there for ur 4wd, reverse and 5th gear switches... on the lwb keep the chunk that goes t the engine harness so we can do most of our cutting and splicing on the interior harness and keep it as stock looking as possible.. also makes troubleshooting much easier when u have plugs instead of hard wiring.
Depot's rules for helping others wire....
1 - DO NOT CUT ANYTHING!!!!!! I'll do the cutting. If ur not sure, leave it alone.
2 - when u unplug shit, mark em. most plugs are unique but there a whackload in the engine area that control vacuum switches and most have the same damn plug end on it.. those u have to mark carefully.
3 - invest in heat shrink butt connectors. most of ur wires are similar size so u'll only need 2 different sizes of connectors. for ur interior connectins, u can use regular butt connetors if ur not a water hog like me.
4 - 10 rolls of electrical tape. and we'll still run out... i like to tape my harnesses up heavy after im done.
5 - this months flavour is captain morgans spiced rum and PEPSI!!! not coke and not diet. I work much better buzzed that sober.. driving, well thats another story :D
dont worry bout wire - i got a few roles, its all the same colour but thats my prob not urs.
dont forget about the new hles in the firewall for the 16v harness.. get urself some goog grommets for that too..
got a warm place to do this?
thats enough for now, we'll talk more details l8r

Hey I'm gonna help YOU !
Done, engines will be pulled, nothin cut and everything labelled.
No problem, you know how I do shit, usually a lil overkill.
5 - this months flavour is captain morgans spiced rum and PEPSI!!! not coke and not diet. I work much better buzzed that sober.. driving, well thats another story :D
thats the easy part !
dont worry bout wire - i got a few roles, its all the same colour but thats my prob not urs.

I'll buy the proper wire cuz if i ever have to fix it id never be able to with the same colored wire.
got a warm place to do this?
Dont be foolish, of course I dont, lol.

1. It's nice to have a wiring Guru on this site that truely knows his shit (Depot)
2. Mudd, just cause u never have dont mean u cant, yer one hell of a smart dude and i know u would be capable of this ( more fun with friends & liquor though)
3. TAKE PICTURES!!!!!!!!! Others are in the midst of wiring nightmares and u never know how much pics would help!!!
4. thanks fer readin

Just reading through this and was wondering how the swap went over and if y'all got any purdy pics of the wiring fun. I may have a line on a 16v engine to replace my 8v engine and am seriously debating it. Only downside is it's just the engine and no wire harness and no tranny...granted I have a 3 speed auto...but might end up being one heck of a fun project.
Thanx,
