Hi all!
I am new to this forum and have done a search for this, but didn't really find anything...
Anywho, have an '87 Samurai. Just replaced head gasket and oil pan gasket... well, the oil pan is leaking from a stripped bolt that I forgot to change out. But it's leaking tan, milky oil. Is this always a head gasket thing, or could it be something else? Hubby is ticked that we now have to do this all over again.
I told him, at least she started up for ya! :D
The head gasket only goes a certain way, right? I thought for sure we had it on right...
Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

sounds stupid but what does the leaking oil smell like? oil, gas, coolant?
brown milky oil is usually a symptom of water mixed in. have a sniff and let us know

Hey! Thanks for replying...
No, that doesn't sound stupid... I already know that it is oil/water mixing. What I don't understand is how the heck it could be blown already :( . I know we had it in right, we fitted it in the garage first, and if it wasn't right, the bolts wouldn't have gone in, correct?
Gosh, I wasn't aggravated earlier, but the more I think about having to take the head off again, the more upset I get, 'cause I also have work to do on my car... oh well, the joys of wrenching, right? :yike
So, please tell me you're not leaning towards head gasket, are ya? :bang:
Thanks! :D

head gasket.. thats where my 2 cents lie.. they are finicky and if u didint clean everything 100% that could be the cause.
now for the bad news... if it aint ur head... u may have cracked the block or the head. time for some compression tests. do the test with the pistons 90 degrees outta phase for each test. ie if ur testing cylinder 1.. do one test with the piston all the way up and another with the piston all the way down 90 degrees rotation on ur flywheel.
laymans interpretaion of results... if u get bad compression on clyinder when its all the way up... head gasket or head is cracked, possible top of block but u should have been able to see that when u had it all apart.
if bad compression with piston all the way down but good when all the way up.. u cracked ur block. this ofcourse assumes ur iston rngs are good and ur not burning any oil... that will just mess with ur results.. u can do wet compression test at taht point for fun.

you can also do a leak down test too. you can borrow a tester from a parts supply store, if they have that where you are , and test for presure in the cooling system. the tester gose onto the rad and you pump it up to 13 lbs, and watch it for a bit, if there is coolant going somewhere, this will push it out where it is leaking and the pressure will down pretty fast.if the store that you deal with don't have a rent a tool program, take it to a rad shop and they can do this test for you, shouldn't cost too much.if the head gasket was bad before, why was it bad?did it over heat for any period of time? if it did over heat, then i would suggest that you do the leak down test/and or compression test like Depot said, and go from there, if bad readings, i would get the head and or block checked for cracks, or just get a used motor, and save your self the money if the problem is within the block or head.like depot said too, the head gaskets for the most part are a pain, you have to have it very clean, and the proper torque done right ,doing it in steps to the proper torque. hope this helps you out too!

Hey people....... keep in mind head gaskets are a "this side up" item.

Yah! And we had it "right side up"....
I just wanted to clarify that we weren't taking off the head just for shits and giggles. We replaced the camshaft. Because it comes out the rear end, we had to pull the head, but problem is hopefully solved now. Yes, it comes out the rear, it's got a plate on it that prevents you from just "sliding and lifting it up and out".
Thanks to all who helped.
