Hey folks, I just got an sj410, the frame says 1982, but the parts say otherwise
toyota engine and trans, however the tcase is a suzuki.
If ipost pics, will anyone be able to tell me if its a 1984 or not? Also, is 1984 the ONLY year for a rocklobster?

Its a early 84 or before.
Not the one you need to make the 4to1 gears.
It is geared about 11% lower in both hight and low range, that the samurai case, some call it a baby loster.

hey! the 11% lower is still good for me!
i guess i will be pulling the flanges and drum brake to swap for my large bolt pattern flanges and my spidertrax ebrake kit

not sure, but i think the flanges on the front of the case, front output and input from the tranny are on a smaller diamerter splined shaft, i beliver the rear output is the same as the samurai. there sould be enough flange to redrill.

i hope you ain't daily driving it! on 31's, your engine will be screaming with those gears and that t'case. good for offroading tho.
if I remember, that t'case will bring a zuk's speedo back to stock with 31's and 3.73's

Szab, i do plan on DD'ing the truck........
do you think i should either keep my stock tcase
or switch back to stock diff gears? i would need a new rear axle as i went to a hybrid housing.

definitely easier to swap tcases than gears. but maybe be more work because your flanges may differ with a post 84 case.
I'd personally swap t'cases. the newer ones are stronger and easier to replace broken parts compared to your SJ case. your 4.62's with 33's would bring your speedo back to stock. 31's would rev a tad high but will have lots a power. gadzooks old sammi ran 31's with 4.62's with a 1.3 and would cruise hwy speeds all day long. not sure on what toyota motor your running (4A-C?) but I'm sure it'll handle the revvs better than any zuk motor can
hope this helps and good luck!

ah, good motor. T series motors had a hemi style CC and a solid lower end. definitely capable of handling some revvs!

yep, thing runs ok.
Have a weber carb coming in, just trying to think of how i can squeeze some more power from this engine (on the cheap). Since its a 1.6 that only puts out about 80hp

gadzooks old sammi ran 31's with 4.62's with a 1.3 and would cruise hwy speeds all day long.

X2 on this.I ran 4.62 1.3 on 32"s and had no problems. My original sj410 with all stock on 31"s was ok in town too. With the bigger motor you should have no problems.

Szabo is on the money here. Your best bet is to find some 33's. With sj axles you'll have to be a little easy on the throttle at times, but that'd be your best bet to enjoy highway/streetability plus have low gears when you need em.
